I found the solution. You mensioned the CMOS, that's it.
If anyone has a problem alike, go to the BIOS, there'll be in one of the

menu's  something like primary com and secondary com. The first one will
be com1, and the second com2. change the com2 to your GL, it will not
harm anything and your win98 (and maybe 95) will still recognize the
modem.
