It seems (to me, at least) that she hasn't tried taking out the watch battery
in addition to the four AAAs. From the above information, I think that maybe
an assembly program that she was running may have messed around with the APD
(automatic power down) interrupt and forgot to reset it.
Be sure that every single source of power to the TI-86 is cut off.
If that doesn't work, all I can think of is taking it to TI for
service...however, most of what I say comes from sources who got their
information from sources who got their information from sources who were
misinformed to begin with, so I might be wrong. Always good to get a second
opinion in cases like this, because taking a calculator to TI and say "fix
this please" isn't too desirable. :-)
