Real variables to strings?

I'm wondering if there's any way to convert real to strings, OR to
evaluate an equation and convert it to a string?  I know about the
command to convert an equation to a string, but if you convert the
equation 1+8+9 to a string, it comes out as "1+8+9" rather than "18,"
which is what I'm trying to get.
