I don't feel you're wrong in any aspect but that it isn't documented.
Mainly because it is.

If you read the schematics, they specify a stereo plug.  A stereo plug
includes left, right, and ground (that's the 3).  A mono plug includes
audio and ground (that's your 2).  The link port, GL cable, etc, is stereo.
 That is why everyone says stereo in their schematics.
