How long did you have the batteries out? I think I read somewhere that in
some (rare) cases you would have to remove All batteries for half an hour.
BTW you tried contrast both ways??
I tried the contrast once, and though the calc was broken until I realized
I has tuned the contrast the wrong way :-)
Also go the reset process after pressing on. (On the 83 it's:        2nd
+mem   5   1   2)
Try that and maybe the calc will reset and then you can change contrast
