ZShell will work on any ROM version. You'll most likely get the latest
ROM anyways, though.

Yup, you can get a $44 one from TI, or make one of the $4 ones, if you're
electronically inclined. Problem is, the $4 one uses it's own software,
and, from what I've heard, can be a pain in the butt occasionally. If
you can fork out the $44, the one from TI would probably be a better idea
for you.

All of it's freeware (TASM is uncrippled shareware though.).

The TI-85 manual would probably be all you need, since you already know
how BASIC works. Before I got a TI of my own, I taught myself how to
program by trial and error, and my previous knowledge of BASIC, so it
wouldn't be any problem for you.
