The reason why the ^2 and * (and other) operators automatically take Ans
as their arguments on a blank line on the home screen is probably
because if you hit * on a blank line, the TI is almost guaranted that
you mean Ans* , becasue if you start an expression with * , it's a
syntax error. (Basically, you're missing the 1st arguement, so the TI
tries to help by putting one there). However, if you type an operator
like square root or an open parnthesis on a blank line, the TI has no
real justification to assume that you mean to type Ans next, because you
haven't made an error yet, so it just acts like it usually does and lets
you type.
It's just a little time saving feature that comes in handy.
