LF: How to use a modem
IMPORTANT : This is intended only for use by people who have the
original TI Graph-Link.
This is a reply to what I have seen on the list lately. There has been
much talk about modems and fterm. I will explain exactly how to do it
on a 25-pin and a 9-pin modem.
• I recommend downloading fterm 1.0 beta 7 from http://www.ticalc.org/
before attempting to do this !!!
• If you own a modem with a "Data Terminal Ready" switch on it, make
sure the switch is set in the "Override" position !!!
• It is neccessary to have a Null Modem Adapter no matter what you are
doing. All that the adapter does is take the Receive and Transmit
signals on your modem and splits them into the correct ports for a
25-pin cable. That is all it does.
• It is neccessary to have a gender changer, since the TI Graph-Link is
male and so is your modem port.
I. 9-pin port on back of modem
(You will need to buy a 9-pin female -to- 25-pin female gender changer
and a 25-pin male -to- 25-pin female Null Modem Adapter)
Take any adapters that you have on the TI Graph-Link off. Now, plug the
gender changer into the back of the modem, and then the Null Modem
adapter into that. Plug your TI Graph-Link into that assembly and the
other end into your calculator.
Looks like this :
Modem -- 9-pin female-to-25-pin female gender changer -- 25-pin
male-to-25-pin female Null Modem Adapter -- TI Graph-Link -- TI 92
Now, goto the fterm part of this document before continuing.

FTerm -
If you are reading this, then you are through the worst part of getting
all of the hardware. Frist, make sure that all of your hardware
essentials are plugged in according to the specs above. Then, put fterm
1.0 beta 7 on your calc and run it.
Then, type in the following commands :
ate0 -- Turns local echo off
(Calc should return "OK")
at&k4 -- Sets modem to XON/XOFF
(Calc may return either "ERROR" or "OK", depending on what kind of modem
you have. If it returns "ERROR", then don't worry about it)
atdt xxxxxxx -- Dials phone number (x's represent numbers)
(Calc will dial modem and sign on to the server)
IMPORTANT : The Calc's ram will fill up very quickly with text from the
server, so if it fills up, then just quit fterm and open it back up
again. It will be at the same place it was when you left, except the
ram will be clear and you may continue.
At this point, you should be on your way. If there are ANY reasons why
this doesn't work for somebody, don't clog up the list with questions,
but email me at
dunngre1@metronet.lib.mi.us with questions, comments, or suggestions.
Hope it works for you !!!
