Page ix from the TI89 Manual; boldface added for emphasis:

"As new functionality becomes available, you can electronically upgrade your 
TI-89. Future software versions include maintenance upgrades that will be 
released free of charge, as well as new applications and major software 
upgrades that will be available for purchace from the TI web site."

I'm sure that a 'Major Software Upgrade' would be classified as a completely 
new OS or the Geomoetry app or something.
