Not necessarily obsleete, though never popular. You can look in the
archives of this mailing list from April 2000 (topic "Library Shell")
for the opinion at the time (which seemed universally against the new
shell). If you look past the gratuitous 89-bashing you can actually find
some good reasons against the use of libraries. A much more vicious
debate on the same subject can be found with reference to the release of
Usgard (in the summer 1997 archives for the assembly-85 list).
