It "pushes"  what's in a register pair  (such as HL) "down". What it really 
does is move the contents to a location  that I don't remember and then when 
you pop it it puts that  info back in the register pair. Apparently some 
computer freaks a long time ago noticed that when you put a tray on the top 
of the stack (in a cafateria or something) then it pushes it down, and when 
you take it off the stack pops back up. I learned this from one of Dux's 
tutorials.
