Yeah you could use a graphlink with packet radio. Terminal Node Controllers
(TNC) that connect to HAM radios for data transfer have standard RS-232
serial plugs on them so it would work fine.

Unfortunately, even though that HAM radios have ranges of several towns (and
free airtime since they aren't cellular phones but more like walkie
talkies), they can only transfer data at around 2400bps and are well out of
price range for most students AND you need a license.

A TNC and HAM radio would probably cost in total about $200 if you find a
good deal. Don't forget, of course, that you need another set at your
computer also. However on the computer side you may be able to get a TNC
emulator and plug the HAM into your sound card.

Because of the insane range of the HAM radios, you wouldn't need to put your
HAM server on a school computer since you don't need to be that close. You
could put it on your home computer and be able to reach it from anywhere in
the city...probably even in another city.

A TNC and HAM could easily be smuggled into your backpack. And 2400bps with
free airtime is pretty cool also. However, none of it makes up for the
price. If you know a couple of 40 year old HAM radio freaks then maybe you
can borrow their stuff and setup a server. But if you can't, I wouldn't
exactly go buy all that stuff.
