i think _memchk will subtract space used by temp vars, so if there's a
lot of those it could give misleading results.  if this is true, use
_get_free_mem equ $464b or do this, which would be the same:
	ld hl,(_FREE_MEM+1)
	ld a,(_FREE_MEM)
