to deepen the mistery of _calc_id, there are two link commands that use
it
(i don't know if anyone cares about linking, but hey)

 $47 send calc id
 $74 request calc id

the calc will ignore the device id in the header for these.  it responds
in the silent link routine:
 $74 responds with $47 and _calc_id
 $47 sets _calc_id and sends an acknowledge
