Okay.  Have you disassembled $02CB?  I have ROM 1.2, and $02CB seems to be
right in the middle of something, i.e. not a valid call.  Is there a thunk
to $02CB on page D of your ROM?

Maybe there's an IY flag that tells whether or not to save the program
when it finishes.
