Not true, from the [sqrt]KEY program, you can't modify any variables, and
basic needs to do so.

I'll bet we can, [sqrt]KEY is loaded to $d478 just as any asm program is, in fact, it is an asm program.  I'm sure a flag just needs to be set or something similair.
