have you played daedalus on an unturboed calc? Performance is impressive. That's because it ties up the CPU as well as it can for the raycasting and grayscale texture mapping.
It might be possible, seeing as the enemy objects can move and inflict damage, to treat the other player as an enemy object with real time updates, but it could seriously slow down the game. Not because of link port speed, but because it's just too much work.
I think it was on the TI-H list before about adding sound to daedalus, which was dismissed for these reasons.
