I found a Huffman 2 pass compresser on the Internet. It was rather fussy.
Anyway, here's the results after some trial and error (I used ZTetris by
Jimmy Mardell as my test subject):
-rw-r--r-- 1 oxymoron 2186 Sep 10 15:17 ztetris.85s
-rw-r--r-- 1 oxymoron 2644 Sep 11 20:25 ztetris.85s.huf
As you can see, it made the program BIGGER by nearly 500 bytes. Definitely
NOT a good sign.
Something tells me that this compression thing may be a pipe dream.
(By the way, the compressor compiled as 7695 bytes. Yikes. Of course, an
assembly version would be a little smaller.)
In case you're wondering, the file that I used can be found at:
ftp://wuarchive.wustl.edu/usenet/alt.sources/articles/06000-06999/6469.Z
But it's really not worth downloading, as it isn't going to help us. Oh,
and you need UNIX to use it. I could try to compile it for DOS, but as I
said there's really no point.
