The ground wire is necessary so that both of the 85s "know" the
difference between a "1" and a "0". If the ground wire is not
present, it becomes very difficult for the 85s to distinguish a "1"
from a "0".
Ground is -; anything above ground is considered a +. If the 85s
don't have a common refrence point for ground, how are they supposed
to know what a - or + is?
A common ground connection is always necessary when communicating
between two electronic devices.
I'm having a little trouble putting this idea into words, but do you
understand? ;)
