the only problem with running stuff through ion/mirage is the fact that to run the program, it has to be unarchived to run... If your program is over 24k, or you've got more than absolutely nothing unarchived and on RAM, you'll have trouble running stuff... (ie, the game Gemini... great game, but requires 23.8k RAM to run - that would be one great reason for some sort of memory expansion...)
