calcless again. I just sent my 82 to TI for repairs. 2 days ago, I let my
little sister use my computer amd she messed something up. I can't even turn
it on. It gives me an invalid system file error. I bought my computer used
and it didn't come with a boot disk so I'm screwed. The place I bought it
from says they'll fix it by wiping the hard drive and reloading windows and
dos for $100. This will result in my losing fully working Orzunoid v6.0
w/On-Calc level editor, 3/4 ported Plain Jump w/fully working on-calc level
editor, the sources to Orzunoid/Galaxian lite, and Jezzball v1.7. This
totals about a month of irreplaceable ASM work. So now I am broke, calcless,
computerless, programless, and exhausted from a week long 8-5 Nike golf
camp. So how was your week? :)

I must say that I haven't posted to the list in about a month since I'm
calcless myself, but GOD, that's bad luck.

Reminds me of some bad luck I recently had:

I decided one day that I should try to learn Linux. Since my dad
wouldn't let me dare attempt to install it on his precious PII400 or the
P100 that has all the important data files, I thought it'd be good to
refurbish an old 486/66 for the job. I spend a good two hours setting it up,
putting a new disk drive (and old video card) in it, finding a spare
monitor, power cable, and keyboard to put in it, and trying to get them all
to the same place (my basement). I start it up, thinking there's 8 megs of
memory in it, and I get nothing. I open the case again, and notice that
there is NO MEMORY in it. I was about to pull my hair out. I asked my dad
about it, and he said he took it out for another computer (he works as a
computer consultant part-time). I had thought that he said that there was
originally 16 megs in it, and he took 8 out.. Worst of all, we had no spare
72-pin memory lying around. I spent the rest of the night licking my wounds
and taking it easy.

Two nights later: My dad comes home from a computer call with 8 megs of
orphan memory. I'm psyched again.

Next morning: I decide to forego installing the memory first and start
downloading Slackware. I download just the basics (no source, no compiler,
no X-Windows (it'd be way too slow for a 486/66 anyways), just what I need
to get started). After spending about 3 hours getting it, I go back to my
Frankenstein experiment and install the memory that I got. I put it in. No
dice. I go the rest of the day feeling depressed.

BTW, worst part: all my calc stuff (besides emulators and such) is on that
PC!!

Here's my non-list-related question: Will EDO memory work on a 486/66?

And just to let you guys know what I've been doing in the past month, I'm
helping set up a site at http://www.epl.org/ for the Emulation Preservation
League (bet you can't figure out what that's for). Not much to it yet, but
just wait.

BTW, any decent 82 releases I've missed? Calcem is getting lonely.
