A82: Recieving and linking. Fixing a link port with wires.

I am trying to fix my completely broken link port. I have succesfully
attached two wires on to two of the metal parts. But there is one
more at the back and above is written the word 'jack'. I know so far
the two wires are sending stuff because I have hooked up both wires to
a light and the light goes on when the calc is on. But I am wondering
how data is transferred through the link and into the calc. Here is a
picture of what I have done.

											 jack
											_____
										| # |
#=metal->	|#    |
										|! #|
											! !
											! ! <-wires
										 ! !
Now when I put the two wires on the the calc to calc link and try to
transfer programs from one 83 to my 83 and can't get it to work.
This is what the calc to calc link cord rod part looks like.

                  Gold top
                  Large black strip
                  Gold strip
                  Small black strip
Large Gold stip going into the cable.

Do I need to attach the wires to the black parts or the gold parts??
So my main question is: Does the link send/recieve in three diffrent
places (gold) or two diffrent places (black) and will my wires to
link rod thing ever work. Any help is appreciated without the link
port working the calc almost useless!
