I usually only have it connected when transferring files. So no more than 10 minutes at a time. Normally a few seconds.
Mostly because I don't want random programs initiating the link.... yes, I've some stupid programs that for some reason - mess with Ti Connect. Even when it's closed =P

me too... but i already left it for a few days... shutdown the desktop with it connected... then used the laptop for a few days...

The cable itself it's connected to the PC for more than 4 years... but wasn't connected to calc more than a few days..

I don't use TI Connect, i use the old Graph Link... it's more stable...

It may be more stable, but it is so much easier to send programs with TIConnect installed...just Right click, "Send To", "Texas Instruments Calculator"...so simple. My cable also is always connected to my computer...about 3 years now...but my calc is only connected to it for a minute or two at a time, and I actually haven't connected it at all in the past 6 mos or so...

Well, my Win98 comp went all weird and wouldn't let me uninstall TI Connect. It just told me "This action is only valid for products that are currently installed."

If your hardware can handle it...otherwise, Win 2000 is probably better (the only really good, stable version of windows - at least in my experience).

I agree, Win 2000 seems to be the most stable operating system made by Microsoft.

Unfortunately, stability is its best feature, and it's not even as stable as Slackware. Plus, it costs a lot more than Slackware. :)

Um, I think you would quickly change your opinion if you tried out Red Hat Linux, or even just a newer version of Windows...

I meant windows and I have tried windows 98 and xp also.
I noticed that 98 is basicly the same as 95 and xp loads to slowly and opens windows slowly.
The best non-windows os is MS-DOS 1.0 :)

Well, yeah, I don't like 98 or XP, but they aren't as horribly unstable and slow as 95. DOS??? Best non-Win OS??? You REALLY need to try Red Hat Linux. (BTW, sorry that this is so off-topic...)

I have a feeling that he was joking about MS-DOS 1.0. I don't think anyone in their right mind would think *any* version of MS-DOS is the best (non-Windows) OS. :)

In he's not joking, then the rest of this is directed at him and anyone who thinks MS-DOS is good.

Just try to concatenate a lot of files together sorted by filename (a common task, especially when used with the "split" command, for example) in MS-DOS. The COPY command just doesn't cut it (its crappy wildcard handler doesn't seem to sort files, at least in Win XP), so you have to type ALL of the filenames (sorted by hand or otherwise) and separated with "+" (making the "+" character illegal in a filename); don't forget to give the "/b" option if you're working with "binary" files, else your files probably won't catenate completely! (It's really sad because this silly distinction between "ASCII" and "binary" files still exists in Windows today.)

That's just a small taste of the "innovation" coming out of MS. :D XP

Of course, in any Unix (including MacOS X) it's just a simple "cat * >allfiles" or similar command. It's funny how people say that Unix is cryptic or "hard to use" or some other things based in ignorance.

Yeah, I could permanently give up *any* GUI for the Linux command line, because it's so flexible and easy to use compared to DOS.

I probably would too, but it's a good thing we don't have to give up our GUI's just to use a good command line.

Windows + DOS = blah.

KDE/GNOME/xfce/whatever + bash/tcsh/whatever = user friendliness, flexibility, and power!

Short answer: no.
Long answer: it really depends on the stability of your computer. If it constantly finds crackpot excuses to freeze or crash, then it might be a bit risky. For example, you might delete a program that will take the driver for the TI device with it. Then, if you have a stone-age OS, it might consider this an excuse and crash. Newer computers are much faster and more stable, so there is a much smaller chance that this will happen. If you have a computer like MafiaMan up there (Win95 or MS-DOS 1.0) then you are on the edge. With Windows 2000 or XP (with SP2), it probably won't matter. Be careful with XP, though. I have had an issue before with plugging my link cable in for around 9 months and XP would never recognize it again. Good thing I have a duplicate cable from another calc ;).

buy a TI-89titanium ... most of them came with a usb silver cable, if you want to emulate it go to TI website and take the rom from there... it should work... (the Titanium version is not compatible with most emulators...)

Speaking of 89titaniums and hex, can anyone tell me why the base mode on my 89 is stuck in decimal. If i change the mode to binary of hex it doesnt work. I have also tried resetting all the defaults but that doesnt work.

Yes. There's another way to change the number base mode from Dec to either Hex or Bin:
Press MODE
Press F2 (page 2 of MODE screen)
Press the down arrow 3 times to get to BASE
While in BASE option, press the right arrow and see the 3 options you want to choose to have the number base into.

Hope this helps.
