1. Installing Dark Shadow v1.0 In order to install Dark Shadow v1.0 on your TI-83, TI-83+, or TI-83 Silver Edition, you need to send the .83* (TI-83) or .8x* (TI-83+ or TI-83 SE) files in this zip to your calculator using your GraphLink or compatible linking software. You can run Dark Shadow either as a standalone program or under a shell such as MirageOS or Doors CS. Once all the files are on your calculator, you can play Dark Shadow at any time by running prgmDARKSHAD. 2. Playing Dark Shadow v1.0 Running prgmDARKSHAD brings you to the main menu; this has five options: Play, Help, Controls, High Scores, and Quit. Choosing Play brings you to the core of the program, the game itself. Help brings up the internal help file; if you need more in-depth help, refer to this file. The Controls menu lets you view and edit the keys used to control the game. These are the defaults:
Choosing High Scores brings up the high scores table. Quit leaves the game, either to the homescreen (if you have run it without a shell) or to a shell (if you used a shell). Once you are in the game, you must shoot the enemy ships. The idea of the game is to keep them from passing your ship at the bottom of the screen. Use the arrow keys or your redefined keys to move your ship left and right. Hold [DEL] to power your weapon and release it to fire. Each enemy ship starts out with 100 health points; the more powerful the burst from your weapon, the more health is taken away from the enemy ship. Once the health of any ships drops below zero, it disappears. Each ship that succeeds in passing you costs you 25 health points, and 100 lost health points subtract a life. When you run out of lives, the game ends. Health, weapon, and shield PowerUps will occassionally fall down the right side of the screen, which you can pick up by shooting (the power of the shot does not matter). They are as follows:
3. The Goal of Dark Shadow v1.0 The goal in Dark Shadow v1.0 is to prevent all of the enemy ships from passing you for as long as possible. Points are awarded on the basis of ships eliminated vs. ships that escape. PowerUps add to your score. The top five scores are stored in the high score table and are automatically entered at the end of a successful game. 4. Dark Shadow v1.0 Controls The general controls of Dark Shadow v1.0 are outlined in the table in section 2 above, Playing Dark Shadow v1.0. However, this game includes a unique system that allows you to redefine the keycodes. That is, you can change which keys do what. To adjust the default settings, go to Controls from the main menu. Here you will find four lines, with the key preceeding a numerical value after it. To change the key setting for any value, use the [UP] and [DOWN] arrows to place the > before the use and press [ENTER]. You can now press the key that you want to use for this, which will redefine the key and return you to the Controls menu. Note that these settings are effective only within this game and do not apply to any other area of your calculator. Once you are finished defining keys, press [2nd] to quit back to the main menu. Press [ALPHA] at any time to reset defaults. 5. Troubleshooting Occassionally the game might give you an Err: Undefined message. If this happens, there are two possible solutions. First, make sure that DARKSHAD, ZDS1, ZDS2, ZDS3, ZDS4, and Pic4 are on your calculator. If not, try to resend them. If it still does not work, try resending all of the files again and choosing "Overwrite" for duplicates. Secondly, make sure that you are not using a cleanup program that performs the ClrAllLists command. If you are, delete that line of the cleanup program or stop using the cleanup program.
