I agree, too. The archives have been on heavy, but files haven't been added for eight or more days!

yes, but currently i think it's quite obvious (until yesterday) that there are more uploads than files making it in to the archives.

Heck, yeah. Anything that will help the user accounts is good. With my clumsy fingers, twice, I typed in the wrong e-mail address to update it, and I typed it in wrong. :P Each time it took about 7-30 days to be fixed.

Why?

Why does tcalc.org want to have your e-mail address? I'm okay with it, but what are they going to send to you that they really care about? Or you care about, for that matter?

i don't think its really ticalc that wants it, but rather they post it so if people have question about your programs you can find a current email on that author of the program

Actually there's a lot of good reasons I could think of. I'm not particularly sure the reasons but I can guess.

Users are probably less likely to troll/flame/spam the boards if there's an e-mail address and IP address to tie the comments to the user. Also I suspect it's to discourage users to create multiple accounts and make it more difficult.

It's also fairly common to require an e-mail address to get an account. You'll need one to get an account at k5, Slashdot, and even other TI sites such as tinews.net.

I don't know exactly why they'd want an e-mail address, but I don't think it's really to send you anything.

The purose is to make sure that the people who sign up with this site actually have the E-mail they say they do. It just saves the people work on this stuff a little work.

It also saves on bandwidth for their newsletter/mail lists. If there are too many unused/unupdated accounts then they would be sending too many newsletters to dead email addresses. I know how much of a pain legitimate mailings can be if there are tons of dead emails and you receive tons of responses of (No such Email) and the like. I think this is a great idea and it sure beats having to do it all by hand.

but what if ,for instance, someone didn't want the newsletter or, perhaps, nothing sent to them at all

why should an e-mail be required?

Requiring an e-mail prevents people from creating ridiculous numbers of accounts, for such lame purposes as stacking votes or posting a response to their own post. I bet some people probably still have multiple accounts (and those people suck(watch one of them flame me for this)), but at least not ridiculous numbers of them. So votes are rather reliable

Actually, I don't necessarily disaprove, I was just wondering what good it did. I assumed that it must do something good. Now I know.
