seriously :) I've got a server (TINews) that's a AMD-K62 333 w/ 64megs RAM (SIMMS) on a 66mhz bus mother board w/ an 8.6gig HD. Then I've got my personal computer thats a AMD-K62 300 (100 mhz bus) w/ 64megs RAM (DIMMS) w/ a 20gig HD. Most of which I bought all myself so I can't really be called THAT spoiled. I can't afford anything but AMD K62's :)

Now wait a minute, there. I pay for all my stuff with my own money that I work for. I have never really had an allowance. My computer, phone line, Internet connection, and calc (TI-89) were all bought by me with the money that I made from working, so I am certainly not a "spoiled" kid. But believe me, I know plenty that are.

Tell me about it. Kids today are spoiled. Why, back in my time I had a 300 baud modem, an Atari 400 w/16k, and a cassette tape, fer cryin out loud! It would take 20 minutes to download a 16k program using x-modem. Hell, y-modem had not even been invented yet!

We did not even have compression programs!

By the way, if anybody could, can you e-mail me a program that will downgrade my TI-89 from AMS 2.04 to 2.03? Thanks a lot

what Dell is doing is introducing dual math co-processors to the 900 MHz chip, giving it that slight boost to 1 GHz. Intel didn't do this.

Guess what? I have a yet unreleased 15 GHz Pentium IV Willamette IBM with 6 gigabytes of RAM and 4000 gigabytes (4 terabytes) of hard drive! The hard drive operates at 22,000 rpm. It has a 256x CD-ROM drive and a 128x64x256 CD-RW. It is connected to a satellite modem that can download web pages at 50 MB/second. It is displayed on a 60" plasma computer screen. It has an industrial prototype graphics card, a Voodoo 7. Beat that!!!

My uncle buys his own computer parts (any type of processor he wants, any type of modem he wants, and flat out anything he wants the computer to have, or seperate parts to make his very own customized processors) and builds his very own computers for almost half of the prices of the computers that all of you are talking about. And I don't know the specifics of any of his PC's or laptops that he has made, but he has gotten offers from companies for help. Beat that!

Yo, dingbat. There ain't ever going to be a Pentium IV. The Willamette is going to have some other trademark name that I read in PC Magazine. All recall is that it ends -ium. Oh, and I would like to see that CD-RW and Hard Drive. The RAM is half-way believable though.

Tell me about it. But, I have to join in the fun.

I've got:
400Mhz Celeron OC to 633mhz
128 SDRAM
16mb Voodoo 3 2000 PCI
Soundblaster Live! Platinum
40x CDROM
AT&T @home fiber optic cable (T3 on steroids)

The dream system at the moment does not use the new AMD Athlon 1ghz. They aren't compatible with the GeForce 2's until later this summer. The new motherboards will help.

The ultimate system is as follows:
-Either a 733mhz Intel Coppermine or AMD Athlon 800Mhz chip
-512 RDRAM
-72x CDROM (8x DVD if you need it)
-Gillomet nVidia GeForce 2 64mb (4x AGP)routed through a Voodoo 3 3000 32mb (4x AGP). The GeForce can handle any games that use the new GPU, and the Voodoo can handle 3dfx games, OpenGL, Glide, or Direct 3d, and still use the GeForce's power.
-21" monitor
-Soundblaster Live! (X-gamer, Platinum, or mp3+)
-40gig HD
-Linux or Windows 98 (wait for Windows ME 2nd edition to switch)
-AT&T @home Fiberoptic cable modem service (best residential connection available most anywhere)

24 MB RAM (Maxed Out)
2 Hard-drives:

and here's the kicker:

a cox cable modem (my friends got a 14.4/333MHz that downloads faster)

Plus both my parents sit at computers all day
My dad being a Senior Systems Analyst whos Job requires at least PIII 500MHZ.

There is no point to buying a new computer just to stay on top. The only reason you need a new computer is when your old one is not capable of things that you want it to do. I just upgraded from a Voodoo (the original) to a Voodoo5, that's because I _need_ something better than a Voodoo to run the games I want. My proc. is a PIII 450Mhz and I don't see any need to replace it in the near future, as it runs almost anything perfectly.

It's a sad world when people think that they need a new computer just because the guy next door has a better one.

I don't get a new computer whenever a better one comes out, (don't have time or $ to get a new PC every day) only when my current one isn't good enough for what I need to do with it.

A list of the computers I've owned and why I replaced them:

1) 8 MHz 8086, 640 kb RAM, 21 MB HD with DOS 2.1 (not enough speed/memory to run good software; got rid of it when hard drive crashed)
2) 33 MHz 386, 4 MB RAM, 68 MB HD with Win 3.1 (too slow; couldn't upgrade RAM or OS; ran out of HD space. Has been in a closet since I bought computer #3)
3) 100 MHz Pentium, 32 MB RAM, 1.2 GB HD, 33.6k modem (still use it sometimes, but the hard drive is almost full)
4) 475 MHz AMD K6, 56 MB RAM, 5.3 GB HD, 56k modem (the one I'm using now)

seriously though, if you would just take a few days (a week for seriously slow readers) and learn to do small upgrades, you could just add a LITTLE bit each time something comes out, and still be fairly "teched out". My new laptop I am buying (in the NEAR future), is something like:
600MHz, 128MB RAM (for 3D animation), 12.0GB HDD, etc etc. oh, win2000 to... :-)
how about posting that twice?

First, Uni means "one" so I don't think it's unihertz..
(it's Leuto)
Second, HELL NO! That many clock cycles in one second? Think of the heat that thing would put out! You'd have to run the thing in a vat of liquid nitrogen! Also, I don't think that's even possible! The closest THEORETICAL computer of that speed is the quantum Computers, but no one has any idea how they would build such a thing! A computer running at that speed would cross the threshold of space time(in layman's terms, it would go equal or greater to the speed of light) and to any person that is properly educated, you would know that that is impossible.

And if you're not, figure it out using this formula:

E=mc^2

I hate when people get memory and storage devices mixed up!
Hard Drives are NOT memory - they are magnetic storage devices
CDs are NOT memory - they are optical storage devices
Memory usually requires energy to work (so if you turn it off the memory gets erased), and both Hard Drives and CDs do not require energy to work (well, at least to prevent data loss)

I agree with your main idea, but there's a technical issue... Hard drives and CD-ROM drives are both "random access" memory. As you said, though, they are all memory. HDD's and CD-ROM's are used as "mass storage", where SIMM, DIMM, DRAM, etc. are generally considered "system memory."

I'm not convinced that hard disks and CD-ROM drives are memory - I looked up the definition of "Random Access" in my Penguin Dictionary of Electronics and the definition of "Random Access" is that the access time is independent of the memory address ... surely the CD-ROM unit has to move the laser and the HDD likewise has to move the data head thing, hence the access time IS dependent upon the address, although admittedly the time involved is small.

Re: What is the speed of the Internet connection you most commonly use?
TipDS

That definition gets the general idea across, but in your context is is flawed. There are, basically, two kinds of "memory" access: Random and streamed
*Streamed access is what you get from punch cards, tape drives, etc. It requires that you start from the beginning of the media and read, sequentially, all the data until you reach the data of interest. That is why it's access time depends on it's location.
*Random acces is what you get from a hard drive, CD-ROM drive, DRAM, etc. Data can be accessed directly without reading all previous data. If you want data that is stored in the last sector of the hard drive, the read/write head goes directly to that sector and reads. Same thing with a CD-ROM.

If you need more information, let me know.

Nope, as long as the time is O(1), or constant, no matter which address is requested, it is random. It DOES take time to go between the addresses, but, no matter which address is selected next, it will take the SAME amount of time to access it. (Well...not completely true...if it picks a point on the platter that is farther away, the read head will take more time to move there...but that doesn't matter...I was just simplifying the definition of O(1).)

Punchcards, tape, and the like are O(x), as they take more time to get to a point, the farther towards the end of the tape (card) it is.

I won't argue about wheather CD-ROMs are actually memory (because I don't have time / don't really want to - although this argument applys to CD-ROMs as well - besides, what about CD-RW or DVD?), but Hard Drives are not memory... Memory in a computer is a place that NON-permanent data is stored, and memory (almoast always) requires some form of power to be able to work (your memory gets cleared when your computer shuts down or you turn off and remove ALL batteries from a calculator, ect...) Hard Drives are not memory, they are storage devices.

And now, I will go play Ground Control [after lunch] - which I just got (I ordered it yesterday, with free overnight shipping)...

I understand what you mean, as RAM, temporary volatile memory is generally referred to as the memory of a computer. However, memory is any device used to store data assosciated with a computer, irrespective of whether it is volatile/non-volatile, writable or rewritable or read only ... hence CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD, RAM, EEPROM etc., even mercury delay lines, all can be termed as memory, BUT are not, in general informal usage referred to as the computer "memory".

Re: I agree approximatly 100%
TipDS

I would be cautious on defining what something "IS", based on what people commonly "CALL" it. People frequently give names to things, when the name does not fit correctly. You are correct that people usually refer to the memory provided by a hard drive as "hard drive space." It is also true that people refer to the memory provided by SIMMs, DIMMs, DRAMs, etc. as memory. People also frequently talk (or talked) of 2400 "baud" modems, 9600 "baud" modems 56k "baud" modems. And what is a "k"? Is it 1000 or 1024? Hmmm don't want to start on that.
I think we all agree that the term "baud" was/is badly misused. To my knowledge, there are no modems that actually operate above 2400 baud, even though the bit rates are much higher.

As for the stated requirement that memory require power to work... Well, technically, a hard drive requires power to work also. At least, I've never seen one work without any power being supplied. That is really beside the point. Memory need not be volitile to be considered memory. The whole reason the term volitile ram was coined was to differentiate it from the non-volitile ram that is available. I mean, doesn't the TI-89 have a portion of RAM that is non-volitile? I think it is even referred to as ROM. i.e. "Flash ROM" A confusing term in itself, since it indicates a (R)ead (O)nly (M)emory that can be flashed (written to.)

Now, if we want to get really down to the nitty-gritty, we can go to the real definition of memory. A memory is actually defined as anything that has an output based on a time delayed function of the input. From there, we really only narrow down the type of memory we are talking about.

I would encourage all of you to explore this further. I especially encourage it if you plan on going into the field of electrical engineering. Even more so if you plan on specializing in microprocessors.

Glad for further discussion,
Tip DS

Yeah ... actually i read the other day in a textbook that k (lowercase) as in x10^3 stands for kilo, but K (uppercase) is x2^10 and doesn't stand for kilo. So a kilobyte would be 10^3 bytes where as what is normally referred to as a kilobyte i.e. 2^10 bytes is referred to as a K-byte
unless the textbook is wrong of course ...
Another interesting point is that you say a hard drive needs power to work ... surely it needs energy to work and power to do work in unit time (if you're being pedantic!)
With your definition of a memory ... wouldn't a wire count as a memory, as this will give a delayed output (minutely delayed) as a function of its input? or am i just being dumb now

Reply to this comment    17 June 2000, 15:01 GMT

Re: I agree approximatly 100%
TipDS

As for the k vs. K definition... That may be a more modern convention. If so, I like it. It would help clear up some confusion, if everyone would obey it. In the early days, though, Kb was an approximation of a real kb. (If I can use your convention for convinence) 1024 bytes was (and still is) roughly one thousand bytes.

As for your use of a wire as a memory, you are 100% correct. In fact, for transmission lines that are significantly long with respect to the wavelength of the signal they carry, a memory model is used. When this is the case, the delay is no longer minute. (Did I spell that correctly?!) There is also research being done into using superconducting "wire" to act as a power storage element. Put a power signal on a wire and the wire remembers the signal until it is needed (and drawn from) later.

I guess this is a bit of a tangent, but I think this all makes for interesting conversation.

If you take a hard drive out of a computer for a week, disconnected from all power, and then put back into the computer, the data that is on it doesn't get erased - that is what I mean by it doesn't require energy (in the form of electricity) to work.... The same goes for CDs... You can have a CD that you haven't used in a few years and the data on it will still be there... with RAM, all data would be erased if that happend...

I know that situation well. I bought my 500 MHz Celeron in early April. Back then it wasn't nearly as slow of a computer as it is now. Since AMD introduced the 1GHz Athlon, my computer has gone from an "economy" machine to a completely obsolete machine. That's what two months will do to a computer. You'd have a heck of a time even finding a 500 MHz machine on the shelves anymore.

I bought my machine for $599, an HP Pavilion 6630 w/ 500MHz Celeron, 64 megs RAM, and a 10 gig hard drive. I even added a WinTV Stereo TV/Radio tuner card and an Aureal Vortex 1500 sound card (it may not be SB Live, but it's one of the best sound cards I've ever heard) and yet my computer is already ancient history. Of course I wiped my hard drive of the HP preinstalled crap, partitioned my hard drive into three parts (main, swap, and data storage), and used 98Lite to install Windows 98 SE. I run Windows 98 without IE 5 and using LiteStep as my desktop shell. My system may be obsolete, but it still does some pretty cool stuff. Too bad you can't overclock a Celeron on an i810 motherboard with a Phoenix BIOS. Oh, well. I'll just try to find out if I can upgrade to a PPGA Pentium III or I'll get a really fast Celeron. Comming soon: a 40 gig hard drive, an extra 196 megs of RAM, a CD-RW, and Windows ME (when it comes out).

(Yes, I was kidding about the piplined cmos chip..There is like the one prototype in the world..)
I don't know why, but it like to think for no reason at all..the HDD light goes on, and framerate and gameplay drops like a 10 ton weight.(that's about 13 tonnes for you METRIC folk). I have no idea why. It didn't used to do that. Now it does. Why? I don't know. Nothing SEEMS to be wrong..AAA!

Good show, although I believe you read that out of some mag. Store-bought computers like those run up about $7,500. Either you have a mighty fine job, or you have absolutely no idea how much cash you wasted. Yes, I do like to get cocky when we all get into some pissing contest. Anyways, you'd need that kind of computer to handle this page. My school has a T3 connection and it still takes forever to load this page.

If it's in good condition in 10 years, it might be worth something. You won't likely get a single bid on eBay unless it's in perfect condition and has all of its stuff with it.

I have all the stuff it needs; the monitor and (of course) the main comp, a little dusty though. I have the mouse also, the disks that show you how to use the thing and a dotmatrix printer to boot. Then there are the disk drives...

Now I am not sure, but I think that a floopy drive was a prototype for the more advanced floppy drive... (same for the disks, which were only made compatible with thier respective drives)...

Has anyone but me noticed that "1.44 MB" floppy disk can hold only 1.41 MB? And it's not 3.5 inches but 3.54 by 3.56.

The Capacity of a standard "1.44 MB" floppy disk is 1,457,664 bytes, which is 1.38 MB... This is because companies that make storage products (especially Hard Drives) define MB as '1,000,000 bytes', not as 2^20, or 1,048,576 bytes, which is the 'real' definition of a megabyte... which is why my '10.2 GB' hard drive is only 9.54 GB I think you can figure out why they do this...
