I agree. I voted to create a forum, but I think everything else is great the way it is.

You have time to make a new poll but not finish the POTY result pages? :P

Then again, why do I care? I haven't released anything in a year and a half.

Would it really take that long to determine the Programs Of The Year? (Excuse my ignorance, staff!)

I know jobs are split up among the staff, but as something Kevin Kofler posted, "... you really couldn't of picked a better time to [update the survey]!"

It would not take longer than 10 minutes.... That is what is making everyone even madder day by day...

Ticalc really needs an organized Forums section.

A forums section would be very nice.. in fact, the more I think about it, I should have voted for it. I voted to re-categorize the archives to make it easier to find files.. mostly just to seperate out the crap files from the good ones.. I think the file archivers should take like one week out of their schedules where no more new files could be uploaded [like the site being put on pause.. except for news and surveys and the like..] and sort through the archives to weed out crap files.. I'd help if the idea ever made it through.. I'd just like to see how much of the archives is truly worth the space it takes up.

It would probably take more than a week. :-) But a good idea nonetheless. The only problem is that there wold probably be huge backlash if I deleted a couple hundred programs. But, perhaps it's for a greater good.

See, in a way, this problem is also solved by file ratings. Hopefully the good files bubble up to the top, and the not-so-good files just kinda sit there on the bottom.

except nobody rates anything, so some good programs never get rated....and a lot of crap files get rated, but really low.

You know what would be good is if it bugged you with emails until you rated files you downloaded. Believe me, I'd rate everything right away!

That's actually not a bad idea.. the server could keep record of files you download, and, after a set time period, [maybe a week or so] an automatic no-reply email would be sent to the email address provided on your account. In this email would be a link back to that file asking you to rate the file.

After reading this, I went and rated about 15 or 16 files I tried in the past. :-) If I could remember and find all the files I tried several years ago, I could probably rate more. Also, it would be nice if there was an obvious way to check which files I've already rated. I accidentally re-rated files I already rated before. Kind of annoying.

Then make registration mandatory before downloading so you can send emails to everyone who downloads :-)

If it would help this site, I would volunteer to go program hunting... err i mean deleting bad programs. I heard lots of people talk about how long ago people submitted area files and quadratic files like crazy. Have the relics of a lost age been deleted yet, or are they still there taking up page loading time?

No, they haven't all been deleted, just look in the 83+ BASIC section.

And yes, I would be happy to help sort files too. With however-many-thousand in the archives, it's not like we can expect the staff to handle everything themselves! The only problem I can see with that is that some people might delete files for no good reason, or some people might claim that their crap was deleted for no good reason. To get around that, maybe files could only be deleted if marked as bad by a certain number of people and a reason would have to be given or something.

The thing is if TIcalc made a forum they would have to either make a custom forum with static files or something or get a faster server. I dont think a Dual 400 MHz would run the website and a forum without upgrades :S

Still, TIcalc.org would need big upgrades or a new server.

Actually, to be honest, it's quite possible we could pull off a forum with the existing hardware. We might have to build our forum right into the kernel, but that's no big deal. :-)
