Actually, either more mem, or exteror mem, would be nice. I pivk more because it would be eaiser to keep track of all your games.

Actually TI needs to make an OS that supports nested folders and one that has a 32-bit proc.

with this little memory, we don't need folders, although a good interupt system would be nice (-:

Nested folders, and a touch screen!

My 89 has so much memory: I have about 30 folders, which should be organized under "projects", "downloads", "utils", and the like. Also, I often have to create newfolders whenever I download things, adding to the confusion. I make numerous basic programs (current total is probably 200 KB of them!) belonging to various projects of mine, each of which I like to segregate into its own folder. It would be great to have a subfolder under "basicprogs/mine" called "current projects", etc... just moaning... informatino overload....

A small gripe of mine: the readme files for the programs I get are almost invariably text files. If these readmes were called "readme.89t" for download to the calc, I wouldn't have to carry around sheaves of paper. From now on, all the programs I upload will have docs in PC .txt and calculator .89t format, readable on the target calcs.

That is one helluva good idea... I like it (the on-calc Readme files)!

Never thought of that... I'm going to steal that idea from now on :) That would be really great for those long confusing games... like those text adventure games... you'd definitely want to carry around a 89t file for the tips and stuff.

I've always been curios why people never did that.

because the text file could easily be bigger than the program, at least with asm games. Though it is so easy to do there is no reason not to include it for the people who would like it.

this doesn't have anything to do with the topic, but my computer's background looks so empty without my animated monkey head (see above link)...

my hard drive did something (nobody's quite sure what) and we had to replace it...

to keep this on topic at least somewhat: calculators new should have much processer faster (don't ask why I wrote it like that, I just don't feel like making sense)

Probably either:

1) Head Crash - The read/write heads hit the surface of the disk platters in it.
2) You let the smoke out! NEVER let the smoke out of any electrical device. :p

when you really think about it, the one that really directly helps calculator function the most is extra memory. you can do interesting things with a color display, but it's not terribly important. with extra memory you can add lots of apps and such to extend what the calc can do. ---> why is there an 83+SE with over a meg of memory, while the 89 has less?

Reply to this comment    7 April 2003, 00:41 GMT

Why? 'Cuz the Silver is newer.
Tavis Segura  Account Info

The '83+ came out after the '89. The newest calcs have all the fun. Even so, I still wouldn't trade my '89 in for it.

Maybe TI could fold and make a Silver Edition _TI-89_ with similar upgrades. Actually, just about anything they add would be great.

Yeah.. I have one. :) The clock runs great! Twice a year I get to write the routine that changes it (spring ahead, fall back). Ahh yes, the little details are such fun.

The APPS thing had to be turned off; I found that too annoying. Still, 2.08 has its merits.

For one thing, I am still impressed with the clock. I have no idea how often I've used it to check the time or to look at a TI-BASIC calendar I'd written for it. (I really should publish some of the stuff I wrote) I've even started using it as a timesheet to keep a simple log of stuff.

The problem with publishing time-related programs is that most people here will never use them (we've pretty much given up on AMS 2.08). The really annoying thing to me was the fact that I lost about 100 KB of Flash memory when I installed 2.08.

2.08 has the cool cursor that is a line instead of the full rectangle. Funny....

ummm...that "line" just means that _INS_ert mode is turned on...that's on all of the 89 OS's...the "rectangle" is just "overwrite" mode instead of insert...

It would be nice to have an underline cursor, also. I like those better. selectable... mmm... drowning in options....

The 83/+/SE has an _ insert cursor... But it is in overwrite mode by default and INS cancels when you press an arrow or enter... :\

That would be a nice option for OmniCalc if it could be done... Maybe check that flag every 50 interrupts or something, I don't know... But then, I don't think OmniCalc has an interrupt on the home screen, just key hooks... Speaking of which, Krolypto overwrites and also disables Silent Linking... :(

*groan* The appearance of the cursor has to do with whether you're in 'insert' or 'overwrite' mode ... what a newbie.

I never saw 2.03. Besides the added Flash compatabilities what did it add. BTW the newer the OS the faster the calculator actually ran. I dare someone to clock a 1.00 OS and a 2.0x OS and try to prove me wrong. BTW the speed decrease really sucks...OPTOMIZE

When hw2 came out along with 1.05 i immdediatley upgraded, big mistake. And worse of all there was no way to go back to 1.00. I emailed ti and they sent me a program that when you ran it on the computer, it controoled the link and installed 1.00 back on my calc(at that time graphlink software couldnt install os's). I was so happy, it was such a tramatic experience i have never put another os on my calc.

That's no good reason to not put a new OS on your computer. That's like saying you'll never use Windows XP because you can't get Windows 95 back on your machine that is running Windows 98. Think about it, man. TI-89 AMS 2.03 or 2.05 are both better than 1.anything, and either could be argued to be better than the other.

First off, you double posted. Don't be hasty, we will answer you :)

Second, HW2 stands for Hardware Version 2. When the TI-89 first came out, it was significantly limited compared to the modern TI-89. There were restrictions on memory (i.e. the size of assembly programs), the OS (AMS 1.0x) was inefficient, and (worst of all) the built in catalogue could not be user-upgraded. TI made a software revision (AMS 2.0x) and a hardware revision (I think to add more memory and speed) to please the lovers of the TI-89 (like they did when they created the TI-83+ SE).

So, in reality, there are actually two types of TI-89's in the world: HW1 and HW2 TI-89's. For further proof, if you look at some of the older software (like DoorsOS), the README will tell HW2 users that they need a patch to allow them to be compatable with the software.

The program size restrictions came out on the HW2 calcualtors...

I think the HW1 are better for games, since they're DoorsOS compatible (most of them). 2.05 isn't, so the pretty games don't work :( (I've gotten a few to work, actually) And another thing, has anyone ever gotten Street Fighter 2 to work? I tried for about three hours straight one day... each time, killing my calcualtor to try to get it to work. I gave up.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Why? 'Cuz the Silver is newer.

Actually, the latest HW2 patch is compatable with AMS 2.05.

I said "memory restrictions", not program size restrictions. Maybe that was a poor choice of words, because what I meant was the restrictions in the 1.00 version compared to 2.05 and 2.08. 1.00, since it was the first AMS version, probably (I'm not entirely sure; I've never used 1.00) had a few memory-related bugs and lacked some of the conveniences of 2.0x versions (like the upgradable catalogue). I guess the phrase "memory restrictions" was repeating information.

HW1 is better for everything, no it doesnt have any restrictions, HW2 is the one with restrictions, and HW2 cant do greyscale nearly as well. and best programs were written for it.
