Things you will encounter in Duke 68k, and what to do with them:
Enemies: Simply shoot
them enough that they die. These can walk, or be stationary (mines).
Items: Run over them to pick them up. (Health, Score Boosters, Weapon
Powerups, etc)
- These are "trigger" terminals. Once you
shoot one enough, it turns into this:
,
which turns off an electric field or wall, often blocking the end of the level.
Tile Effects:
- Water: This slows movement and eats away at health. A
helpful tip: You get a health bonus when you jump out of water, which you can do
more than once.
- Lift/ Elevator: Let these tiles take you up much higher.
- Poison Gas (not yet used): Simply avoid, this eats at your
health.
- Shootable tiles: If you face a wall that you must pass,
shoot at it! It probably can be destroyed. A helpful tip: These can only be
destroyed when using the bullet fire line.
- Platforms (Trees, etc): You can jump up through these, and
walk left/right through them. However, you can land safely on them.
Game Play:
Normally, an exit is at the far right of the level. However, you must do
many things along the way, like kill enemies, get health to stay alive, and turn
off electricity walls to be able to access the exit. Note that the exit is often
invisible. When you find an exit, Duke walks on his own to the right of the
screen, and the game goes to a Score Summary screen.
Save your game often! Press F3 (Quick Save) or F5. Note that you can only save when you are standing still onscreen (i.e., the screen is not scrolling at all). Also note that save games store position and button (terminal) status, but enemies will reappear and Duke will have 100 health.
Try not to die! You have a limited number of lives in the game. Once you go through these, you die completely and are returned to the main menu.
You can restart a level by using the suicide key (hold Enter for ~1sec), but you will lose a life.
