1. THE STORY
--------------
You are Kurai, a horrible murderer who ravaged the countryside. You got caught, thrown into jail, and you expected to rot there forever. The only reason you didn't make a noose and end it all was your lover Akara, who was your only connection to the outside world. Then, one day, you awake. All the prison guards have been slain, and your door is unlocked. You set out to understand what is going on. Thus begins... DYING EYES.
--------------
2. CONTROLS
--------------
2nd brings up the game menu and selects things, while Del cancels from menus. The right arrow key will select things when leveling up.
When you're not in a battle, the Arrow Keys will move Kurai about, and Clear will quit the game.
You can also make decisions when asked by pressing 1 and 2.
This control set is for the TI-82 and TI-83+ versions-- in the TI-85 and TI-86 versions, More takes the place of Del, and Exit takes the place of Clear. All other controls are the same.

Beginnings
**************
Choose "New Game" to start a new game.
Here, you get to set up your character's attributes. Select things with the right arrow key. You get 170 points to apply to your HP, MP, Strength (STR), Intelligence (INT), and Dexterity (DEX). Strength increases the damage your attacks do, you need certain levels of Intelligence to learn different spells, and 40 Dexterity gives you double evade, while 128 DEX makes running away always work. I suggest giving 100 HP, 46 MP, and 8 each to STR, INT, and DEX, but you can give whatever you want. Whatever you do, it's a very good idea to give AT LEAST 100 HP and 40 MP. (Note: I have received reports that settings of 90 HP, 40 MP, 26 STR, and 8 INT and 6 DEX work a lot better in the short run, but are a little harder to balance out later. For instance, if you use these settings, you'll probably be qualified to take on the XTech soldier at Level 2. In this walkthrough, I'm going to assume you chose the more balanced (but harder) proposal.)
Next, you have to pick a spell to start the game with. (See Section 5, Magic & Skills, for more info on the different spells and skills.) Select Heal here, or you will have a very hard time of it.
Then, you have to choose a Skill to start with. Right now, ReLife is useless, Regen and CutAll use too much MP, and Build and Smoke don't offer any possibility of getting your HP back. I would suggest HP --> MP (if you want to play it safe-- very boring), Xfrm (the best choice-- a good balance between power and speed), or Steal (if you want to really take a chance).
Now that you've chosen... off we GOOOOOOO!
**************
Part 1: Escape
**************
/////
•Awakened•
"Huh? The cell door is open..."
/////
You awake in the prison where you have spent your past many years. Now, however, the cell door
is open and you should start exploring. Go out of your cell to the hallway, then go to the left. In the last cell before the stairs
on the bottom side is a box
. Boxes usually contain one of these things: A scroll (gives you XP-- I'll explain in a second), some gold, or a combination of HPkits and MPkits.
By now, you will have probably run into your first battle; if not, walk around a little until you do. In your first battle, you will be facing one or two enemies. (See Section 4, Enemies, for details.) Use the Heal spell if your HP gets low. Your skills will come in handy here-- if you chose Xfrm, you can shuffle until you get some easy enemies. If you picked Steal, you can try it (and hope you manage to... "borrow" something first time). If you chose HP --> MP, you can heal yourself, swap HP and MP, and heal yourself again, thus recharging both stats. Once you defeat the enemies, you get Experience points, or "XP". After enough XP, you level up (more on that later).
Now, go up the stairs on the left.
/////
"All the guards have been slain..."
/////
Now, you're on the main floor of the prison. Go right, then down through the door. Go right and down again, then left, and keep going left and down through the doors until you see a box, which you should get. Go right as far as you can, up one square, and right again. Get the box you can see, then go up through the door. Move through the door above you, then go right and up. You are now a little to the right of the prison's exit (the stairway), but you DO NOT want to go there yet as there's a boss guarding it. Instead, roam around the prison until you level up.
When you level up, four things happen. (1) You get 30 points to add to your stats. This time, I suggest bringing HP to 110, MP to 50 and splitting the balance between STR and INT (you can worry about DEX later.) Alternately, if you chose 90 HP, 40 MP, 26 STR, 8 INT, and 6 DEX, bring your HP to 100, your INT up to at least 12 (so you can learn Burn), and the rest of your points into STR and DEX equally. (2) You get to pick from the spell list again. This time, if Burn is there, choose it-- otherwise, since you already know Heal, just press Del to skip this. (3) You also get to get a new skill. Right now, if you don't have HP --> MP, you should get it. If you already DO have it, choose Xfrm instead. And (4) your HP and MP are fully restored.
Now that you've leveled up, keep exploring and battling until you get to Level 3 (for your second level up, select Burn if you don't know it. Also, if you don't have HP --> MP, GET IT NOW!! Otherwise, get Build). Now, go to the exit stairway, straight into a fight with--
/////
"What? An XTech soldier?!"
/////
**************
Boss: XTech Soldier
***********************
HP: 250
**************
This is your first boss, or "leader" as the manual calls it. This XTech Soldier is easy to beat, but only if you know (or figure out) how. By now, you should have 120 HP and 60 MP. Here's what to do:
(1) Attack the soldier until his attacks bring your HP down to around 30 or 40.
(2) Cast Heal.
Repeat this process until your MP is at or below 45, then
(3) Cast Heal if you need to.
(4) Use HP --> MP.
(5) Cast Heal again.
This recharges both your HP and MP. Now go back to Step 1 and continue from there. He'll fall soon.
OR:
(A) You can try casting Burn 7 times, while Healing as necessary. This method will have roughly the same effect, but you'll be MP-drained at the end of it.
(B) Finally, if you went for the 90 HP, 40 MP stats set when you started, you can just attack, Healing as needed (because you'll never need to use HP --> MP.)
**************
/////
"What's going on? Must get to Kiata."
"They'll know what's up."
/////
Now, just move to the staircase... and you're FREE!
**************
Part 2: Exploring the East
**************
You are now on the overworld map. Move down and to the left, staying on the sand tiles, and enter the town
. Go to your right, then up. Talk to the man
at the top right, and when he asks if you want to stay at the inn, say no (or, the choice of two save slots to save in. Choose one (if, in future, you don't want to save, just press Del) to save your game. Next, talk to the other man you can see (the one to the left of you). He's the weapon shop. Buy the Iron Blade. (If you don't have enough gold, roam around the prison
and fight enemies until you get enough, returning here to stay at the inn if needed.)
From this point onwards, you can arrange level-ups how you want, but here's what I suggest: If your STR, INT, and DEX aren't the same, add points to them to make them the same. Add 10 points to HP, and 10 points to MP. Then, if there's any points left, give them to STR, INT and DEX roughly equally. (Once your INT gets to 100, you don't need to add any more points to it. Same for your DEX when it gets to 200.) You, however, may find your own strategy. If you find a better method, email me and I'll put it in the guide!
Now that you've got a powerful sword, you're ready to begin exploring. You can roam around the overworld map as much as you like, returning to the town to heal if necessary. You may notice several things: First, that there's a tower north of the prison, but you can't enter it ("Odd forces push you back"). Second, there is a large wall of mountains
to the west, with a cave
in them. Don't enter the cave yet. The monsters inside are too strong.
Once you've got another 700 gold, go back to the town. The man to the left of the Weapon shop is the Armor shop. Buy the Iron Armor from him. With this powerful armor, you're ready to explore the cave.
**************
Part 3: The West Cave
**************
Enter the cave. First, go up, to the right and down, then go to your left and get the box. Go right and down the stairs. Continue going to the right until you get to a T-junction. Go up, and go through the door on the left. Go through the second left door, and keep going left until you see a box that you should get. Go back to the T-junction, but this time, go to the right, and down into the door below you. Continue going down, then go through the door you will see on your left. Follow the hallway up and left, stopping to get the box in the room below. Go up the stairs, forwards, then up the stairs again. Walk down, left, up, and finally, right to discover the stairway out...
...which is locked. Go back the way you came and leave the cave. Return to the town and save. Go down until you see another man, off to the lower right. Talk to him. The man will tell you--
/////
"Kiata's past the west cave. It is locked. The man with the key was a diplomat... he perished in the castle prison."
"Wait... you're that killer!"
•Kill him?•
If you say NO, spare him:
"Guards! Stop him!"
/////
You now have the choice of whether to kill him or not. If you say yes, you will have to fight him. He is about equal (in power) to the enemies in the West Cave. If you decide to spare him (by saying no), he'll call the guards and you'll have to fight another XTech soldier. Either one won't be a challenge, especially if you've learned Star by now.
Once you have fought whatever it is you decided to fight, save, then go back to the prison.
**************
Part 4: The Keyper and the Corpse
**************
Return to the prison. I'll assume that you know your way around by now. The enemies in here have not changed and do not pose any threat. Go to where you started the game, your cell. Search (bring up the game menu and choose "Search") the cell south of your own. You should find the key. And, in the process, bring about a fight with a very annoying corpse...
/////
•A corpse appears!•
"my key... my key..."
/////
**************
Boss: Corpse
****************
HP: 400
**************
This leader is a pushover if you followed my advice and bought the Iron Blade and Iron Armor. You will hurt him for 38 or 39 HP while he will only be able to hurt you for about 1. After 11 or so hits, he'll disappear, leaving you with the key.
**************
Leave the prison, save in town, then go to the west cave. Go through the cave, working your way to where the locked stairway was the last time. Enter.
/////
"The ground feels funny..."
/////
**************
Boss: Giant Spider
******************
HP: 1000
**************
This boss is pretty easy, but only if you have the Iron Blade and Iron Armor. Use Rage (if you have it by now) to hurry things along a bit. Be sure to heal, using a MPkit or the HP --> MP trick you used with the Xtech soldier if your MP gets low. Just keep hacking at it... this arachnophobe's worst nightmare will die soon.
Or, for the magic-oriented player, if you have enough MP (or MPkits) and have learned Star, cast it 10 times instead to blow this spider to pieces.
**************
Enter the stairway again to emerge from the cave, on the other side of the mountains.
**************
Part 5: Exploring the West
**************
Go right until you hit the mountains, then go down 4 squares. Go left 6 more squares, then up until you see the town, Kiata. Enter Kiata and save. There will be another man in the same place as the man who told you about the key. Talk to him.
/////
"The wizard in the tower killed them. Won't you help us? Else this land is doomed."
"Sorry, got enough problems."
"Kurai... they've got Akara."
"F**K! Where is she?"
"In the tower... a force field is around it. You need the Faith Blade."
"Search the Southwest cave. The sage there knows where it is."
/////
Before you go looking for that sage, you should first get some better armor. Try to buy the Fire Armor. If you don't have enough gold (very likely), explore the surrounding region, staying close to Kiata in case you need to heal at the inn. In your travels, you will find a cave to the Northwest (locked), a castle to the west (don't go there yet unless you want to die a very painful death), and a cave to the Southwest. When you're ready (and have the Fire Armor), enter the Southwest cave.
**************
Part 6: The Faith Sword
**************
Go up, to the right, and talk to the man. This is the sage the other guy told you about.
/////
"Ha, some savior. But, if you want the Faith Sword, it's in the cave north. Here's the key!"
"I just want Akara... I'm not your d*m* savior."
/////
Leave the cave. Go to the north, to the Faith Cave (as the north cave is properly called). In the cave, go forward and up the stairs. Go forward a little more, then go up the stairs directly to your right. Go right at this junction, then up and around to the stairs. Go down the LONG hallway, then choose the bottom set of stairs. Go forward, and get the box you will come to. Make sure you are at full HP and MP, or use HPkits and MPkits to get there if you aren't. Then, go forward and up the stairs to find--
/////
"The Faith Sword! Akara, I'm coming..."
But:
•Bandits ambush you! They steal the Faith Sword!•
/////
**************
Boss: Three Annoying Bandits
***********************************
HP: 210 each
**************
This battle can be tough. VERY tough. Fortunately, by now you have the Fire Armor and the Star spell. So, here's what to do: Cast Star. Now cast it again. End of problem (and of all three bandits).
**************
/////
"F**k! It's bandit hunting time..."
/////
Go to the staircase to leave the cave, then head back to Kiata and stay at the inn. (If any enemies attack you in your weakened state, use the "Smoke" skill to avoid a potentially disastrous fight.)
**************
Part 6a: Tedium
**************
The next thing you have to do will take time and is very boring: accumulate 13666 gold to buy the Rune Blade and Rune Armor. The castle you came across while you were exploring earlier was the Bandits' castle, but if you go in there now, you'll be flattened. Instead, repeatedly go through the Faith Cave, getting money off of the enemies you fight.
Also, you can use the chest bug in the CrunchyOs version (See Section 8, Bugs & Secrets) to get gold faster than you normally would. Once you have enough cash, buy the equipment and head off to the Bandit Castle.
**************
NOTE: Alternately, a player in a hurry can (before ever going through the Faith Cave) accumulate 5666 gold, buy the Rune Armor, and flatten the monsters and bandits in the Faith Cave with just an Iron Sword (really). He can then go through the Faith Cave to get the 3400 gold needed to buy the Fire Blade, charge into the Bandit Castle, and proceed from there.
**************
Part 7: "...Bandit Hunting Time!"
**************
/////
•The Bandit Castle...•
/////
When you enter the bandit castle, you will be in the "lobby". Explore a bit. You will soon find that there are no passages or staircases leading elsewhere. (If you were in a hurry and charged in here carrying the Fire Blade, you may have to apply Rage to defeat some of the tougher enemies.) Leave the castle and head back to Kiata.
Talk to the man who told you about the Faith Blade before, and he'll tell you that he hears there's a secret switch in the Bandit Castle. Hmmmmmmmm. Head back to the castle. This time, go to the left and get the box (if you didn't get it before), then go up until you hit the wall, then right. Go in the nook above you and search. You'll find a secret switch-- and a section of wall will disappear.
Go right, and climb the stairs. Go up (not the first left), then follow the long passage (the second left) left and right. In the atrium you emerge in after climbing the stairs, go up and right until you get to a very short passage connecting your atrium and another the same size. Then, go up and left, and up the staircase. Go up and left, and get the box below you. Then, go right and up to get the second box in this room. Go one square down, then right to yet another staircase. Heal yourself, then, when you are ready, go to the last set of stairs. Into the chamber where the King is waiting for you.
/////
•The Bandit King! He has the Faith Sword!•
/////
**************
Boss: The Bandit King
**************************
HP: 2500
**************
First, if you have the Rock spell, cast it, then just whack the Bandit King from comfort. However, if you DON'T know this spell yet, the battle will be a little harder. Cast Rage on your first turn. If your HP is below 100, cast Heal. If your HP is above 100, attack! With practice and quite a lot of MP use, you'll defeat him. And he will leave behind the (second-)best sword in the game...
**************
/////
•You find... the Faith Sword!•
"Time to go to the tower."
/////
Continue up the staircase to leave the Bandit Castle.
**************
Part 7 1/2: The Faith Armor
**************
So, you're probably wondering "If the Faith SWORD is the (second-)best sword in the game, wouldn't that make the Faith ARMOR..." You would be right. Absolutely right. However, to get it, you'll need to know the spell Rock. If you already have it, read on. If you don't, level up in the Bandit Castle until you are able to learn it. You will also need either to know the spell Haste, to have the Dragon Armor, or to get a HUGE (think around 100) load of MPkits.
The Faith Armor is in a hidden cave somewhere on the world map. (Fortunately for you, I know exactly where it is.) Starting from the first town (not Kiata, the town you came across first in the game), go east. When you hit a mountain, go north until you are directly to the right of the wizard's tower. Go down one square, right until you hit the mountains again, then up as far as you can. Search to find:
/////
•A hidden cave!•
/////
Explore the cave. It seems to be quite devoid of anything, armor or monsters. Once you are ready to give up, go as far up as you can. If you look hard, you can see that one of the wall tiles looks different than the others
. (I've exaggerated the images slightly so you can see the difference easily.) Now, what I'm about to say next may sound crazy, but it works. Move in front of that one tile, then WALK THROUGH THE WALL! It wasn't really a wall, but a cleverly hidden door. Make sure you are healed, then go forward to the box to find the Faith Armor.
/////
•You find... the Faith Armor!•
Then:
•A serpent appears! "Defeat me to get the Faith Armor!"•
/////
**************
Secret Boss: Greatserpent
*******************************
HP: 10000
**************
Immediately, before you do anything else, cast Rock. Otherwise this guy, the -secret- boss of Dying Eyes, will flatten you in one hit. Next, cast Haste if you have it. This will make things much easier. If you are still wearing the Rune Armor, this will be a long and difficult battle. (If you are wearing the Dragon Armor, it will be a long and easy battle because, with Rock, the snake will be able to hit you for all of 50 damage per hit.)
Don't bother attacking-- you'll only do about 1 damage even if you cast Rage. Just keep casting Sire, and when your MP gets down to about 60, use the HP --> MP swap trick you mastered so long ago. (Note: You may notice that, most of the time, this snake won't attack every turn; time the HP --> MP swap so you'll be vulnerable (i.e. just having completed the swap but not having healed yet) on a turn that it doesn't attack on. If the idea of the HP swap freaks you out, you can just use MPkits, but I hope you brought a great load of them.)
You'll only need to cast Sire 50 or so times-- then the Greatserpent will die and you'll be left with the Faith Armor!
**************
/////
•You find... the Faith Armor!•
/////
**************
Part 8: The Tower of the Demon Wizard
**************
Well, you've done it. You've got the best equipment, all the spells (except for, possibly, Haste and/or Doom), all the skills, and the wizard's tower awaits!
Leave the hidden cave and return to the town. Stay at the inn, and buy as many MediKits, MagiKits, and Bombs as you need. Now, go and enter the Wizard's tower.
/////
•The final battle?•
/////
You are now in the wizard's tower. You can go in one of four directions. First, though, some advice: If you come upon an enemy that looks like a turtle holding a cross , CAST ROCK IMMEDIATELY!! This particular enemy is powerful enough to cause you some damage with both Rock and the Faith Armor. Yowch.
First, go up. Climb the stairs, and go to the stairs below and to the left of you. Next, go up and left, through the door, and get the box above you. Retrace your steps back to the original 4-way intersection.
There's nothing in the south hallway except a dead end and a secret passage to the area you've already been in. Instead, go down the west hallway. The west hallway's staircase kicks you out in front of a blank wall. On closer inspection, it's another of those walls you can walk through, so go down 2 squares, left 2, down 1, left 2, and down 2 to get to another staircase. Go up, right 1 square, then up again, and get the box. The other three boxes that you can see are impossible to get. Too bad. Retrace your steps back to the 4-way intersection, then, this time, go east.
In this final section of the tower, go forward through the first door, but stop before the second. Go left to find another of those fake walls, and get both boxes. Head back through that second door, then go left. Climb the stairs on the left, then go up as far as you can. Move left into the little niche, and search. You will find a secret switch. To get the box above you, walk through the marked wall-section. Next, go all the way down, then go left to the staircase. Go forward. By the fountains, heal your HP and recharge your MP before climbing the final staircase. Then...
/////
•You see Akara, held captive by the evil Demon Wizard.•
"Akara!!!"
"Kurai, help me!!!"
•The Demon Wizard speaks:•
"She belongs to me, in life..."
(screen flashes)
"...or in death!"
•The Wizard strikes Akara to the ground and attacks!•
/////
**************
FINAL BOSS: Demon Wizard
********************************
HP: 10000
**************
This boss is more powerful that the serpent in that hidden cave. However, you have the Faith Armor now. Cast Rock at the beginning of the battle and the Wizard won't be able to touch you! I also suggest casting Rage, to speed things along a bit. Then just attack him, until he dies.
**************
THEN
/////
•Akara lies on the ground, dying. If you use all of your life force to heal her, she will live... but you will die.•
•Heal her?•
/////
You are faced with a grave decision. You can choose, and enjoy (?) the ending, or there's a slightly lengthened version below. Spoiler Alert!
/////
If you choose YES, heal her:
•A noble gesture... but you throw yourself straight to hell! And as you scream to be heard among the chorus of voices crying out for redemption, you know you'll see Akara again...
someday.•
/////
If you choose NO, save yourself:•While Akara was
your lover,
faithful and caring,
sometimes life is
just more important.•
/////
But still, no matter what you choose, no matter how it finished, the game always ends by saying:
•in this cruel place your voice above the maelstrom•
/////
Thus ends one of the best RPGs (for TI calculators, anyway) of all time.

4. ENEMIES
--------------
Each enemy has four attributes, other than its name. Each enemy has the attributes of HP, strength (how much damage they do when they hit you), speed (how often they hit you-- the lower this number is, the more often you get hit), and defense (how much damage they take when YOU hit them). To learn how damage is calculated, please see Section 11, Calculation Details.

5. MAGIC & SKILLS
--------------
There are 8 magic spells in Dying Eyes, and eight special skills you can learn. For most spells, you have to have a certain level of Intelligence before you can learn that spell.
**************
SPELLS
**************
Heal
Recovers 90 HP.
Cost: 5 MP
Can be learned: Anytime
**************
Burn
Fire damage. Around 40 damage inflicted.
Cost: 6 MP
Can be learned: Once your intelligence is at or above 12
**************
Star
Cosmos damage. Around 110 damage inflicted.
Cost: 20 MP
Can be learned: Once your intelligence is above 25
**************
Rage
Powerup spell. Increases attack damage for the duration of the battle.
Cost: 24 MP
Can be learned: Once your intelligence is at or above 34
**************
Sire
Darkness damage. Around 190 damage inflicted.
Cost: 32 MP
Can be learned: Once your intelligence is at or above 56
**************
Rock
Powerup spell. Boosts your defense for the duration of the battle.
Cost: 24 MP
Can be learned: Once your intelligence is at or above 70
**************
Haste
Powerup spell. Boosts your speed for the duration of the battle. Unnecessary if DEX is greater than 200.
Cost: 75 MP
Can be learned: Once your intelligence is at or above 90
**************
Doom
Ultimate Death damage. 500 damage inflicted, which is enough to finish off any non-boss enemy. Be warned this spell leaves you with only 1 HP, so use this only as a last resort!!
Cost: 55 MP
Can be learned: Once your intelligence is above 99
**************
SKILLS
**************
CutAll
This slashing maneuver damages all enemies at once. Unfortunately, damage delivered is low, usually equal to your strength.
Cost: 12 MP
**************
Regen
This technique restores 10 HP every turn.
Cost: 50 MP
**************
HP --> MP
This skill swaps your HP for your MP, and vice versa.
Cost: None
**************
Smoke
This technique lets you run away from any battle (except boss battles). Unlike the normal method (just running away), however, this method will work every time. Unnecessary once you have 128+ DEX.
Cost: 8 M
**************
ReLife
A must in tough battles, this skill will revive you if you are killed. Works once per casting (I think).
Cost: 50 MP
**************
Build
This technique ups the power of your next attack.
Cost: 10 MP
**************
Xfrm
This skill reshuffles the enemies you are facing. This means that if you have a particularly tough enemy in front of you, you can use Xfrm until it's replaced by a weaker one. Won't work on bosses.
Cost: None
**************
Steal
This skill lets you steal HPkits and MPkits from your enemies. It doesn't always work, though...
Cost: 13 MP
--------------
6. EQUIPMENT
--------------
There are two types of equipment in Dying Eyes: Weapons and Armor. Both will prove invaluable to you on your quest.
**************
WEAPONS
**************
Table Knife
The knife you used for eating, back at the prison. It's not exactly sharp or anything, but it is made of metal...
Power: 5
How do I get it: You start the game with it
**************
Wood Blade
Made of enamel-coated Kiata ironwood, this sharp wooden dagger will stand up against weak monsters.
Power: 15
How do I get it: Buy it for 180 Gold
**************
Iron Blade
A simple, but tough, drop-forged metal sword. Useful against most enemies.
Power: 45
How do I get it: Buy it for 700 Gold
**************
Fire Blade
This blade is made of metal treated with solidified flame, a powerful alchemical reagent. It is much tougher and sharper than previous weapons (and as a result of the treatment, the sword will, in some lights, appear to be burning.)
Power: 90
How do I get it: Buy it for 3400 Gold
**************
Rune Blade
This black sword is fashioned from Kiata ironwood, treated with adamantine lacquer, and spelled by a magician to do much damage. As a result, it has many small runes written on it, to hold power.
Power: 120
How do I get it: Buy it for 8000 Gold
**************
Dragon Blade
This weapon, made from the claw of a dragon, is one of a small few existent in the world. It is amazingly sharp and will stand up to anything coming its way. Especially mortals who don't bring enough gold when buying.
Power: 220 (yes, it's more powerful than the Faith Sword!)
How do I get it: Buy it for 12000 Gold
**************
The Faith Sword
Made from the metal of a fallen star, blessed by priests of many gods, this blade is incredibly sharp and keen. In addition, other rumors have been circulating-- that it can repel fields of force, find hidden objects, and even help the wielder distinguish between reality and a trick of the mind...
Power: 180
How do I get it: It's in the Faith Cave-- if it gets stolen, get it back!
**************
ARMOR
**************
Rags
This is what you began the game wearing. Once a prisoner's uniform, the clothes gradually disintegrated, over the years, into being threadbare and torn.
Power: 5
How do I get it: You start the game with it
**************
Wood Armor
Hand-carved out of Kiata ironwood, this breastplate should provide at least SOME protection from enemies.
Power: 20
How do I get it: Buy it for 220 gold
**************
Iron Armor
This complete set of armor will hold up handsomely in the face of most dangers.
Power: 41
How do I get it: Buy it for 700 gold
**************
Fire Armor
This armor is called Fire Armor for its unusual forging method. After being forged, it was fire-tempered, creating an unusual luster and a tougher product.
Power: 65
How do I get it: Buy it for 2500 gold
**************
Rune Armor
This armor is specially constructed by first constructing a core of adamantite, spelled by a magician to hold fast. Then, a normal layer of steel is applied, and the armor is spelled again. Finally, the entire piece is coated in a layer of volcanic obsidian, spelled again, then etched with magical runes to activate the spells within. The resulting armor is both incredibly durable... and incredibly expensive.
Power: 91
How do I get it: Buy it for 5666 gold
**************
Dragon Armor
This armor is one of a very small number in existence. The armor was made from a scale of the last living dragon, shortly before its death. However, it is incredibly strong and will stand up to anything.
Power: 120
How do I get it: Buy it for 9999 gold
**************
The Faith Armor
Once the Faith Sword was complete, its makers decided to make a set of armor to go with it. As they had no more metal left, the makers did an incredible feat: opened a (very small) magical portal to the heart of a star and took some starmetal to forge into a set of armor. This armor is rumored to be nearly impossible to penetrate, with only the very strongest of attacks doing any damage. I say "rumored", because the Faith Armor disappeared some time ago and no one has seen it since.
Power: 260
How do I get it: It's in a hidden cave, guarded by a huge snake!
--------------
7. ITEMS
--------------
MediKit
This item recovers 90 HP.
How do I get it: Find it in boxes, or buy it for 30 gold
**************
MagiKit
This item recovers 40 MP.
How do I get it: Find it in boxes, or buy it for 30 gold
**************
Bomb
This item damages all enemies for about 150 HP.
How do I get it: Buy it for 30 gold
--------------
8. BUGS & SECRETS
--------------
If you are using TI-82 or TI-83+ version 1.2 or older, Haste never wears off.
**************
If you are using the TI-83+ CrunchyOs version (v1.3), all boxes will grow back when you quit the program. Boxes may grow back occasionally in older versions as well.
**************
When you have a choice of which enemy to attack on the battle screen, you can attack a "third enemy" on the far right, even if there's nothing there. If you do attack this "third enemy" when there's nobody there, the damage will get redirected to the enemy in the middle of the screen.
**************
The "death" flash for bosses is always on the far left of the screen. This is OK with most bosses, but can cause some confusion if you're fighting the XTech Soldier or the Corpse.
**************
If you decide to kill the townsman who tells you about the key, you can use Xfrm to make the battle much easier.
**************
If you enter the "exit stairway" in the wizard's tower from the top, you will be zapped elsewhere in the tower instead of leaving it.
**************
At very high levels, the level-up system start acting strangely. According to Charles Wetzel, who sent this tip in:
"Once you hit around 65,000 experience points (but before you've hit 65,535) you gain a level every single battle. Therefore, all you have to do is get to 65,000 points or so and fight really low-level enemies. Once you hit 65,535 experience points, the experience counter resets and you have to gain another 65,000 experience points to do this again. I recommend going to the prison and fighting enemies there, because they yield the lowest experience (slowest reset, most levels)."

9. MAPS
--------------
World Map
Note: The cave with the Faith Armor is marked by the X near the top right corner, so Searching there (if you have the Faith Sword) will uncover the cave.
**************
Town Map
**************
A quick guide to the indoor maps: Each staircase has a letter superimposed over it. The staircase with the corresponding letter is where that staircase will put you out. When, instead of a letter, a staircase has "exit" next to it, it leads out of the dungeon/town/whatever. If "exit" is red with a picture of a boss next to it, that means that a boss is guarding this staircase and, if you haven't already defeated it, using this set of stairs will trigger a boss battle.
**************
Prison Map
Quick way to get to the boss: Go to stairway A, then to exit.

10. FAQ
--------------
I'm stuck! How do I defeat the XTech Soldier?
If you have enough MP, you can use Burn 7 times. If your strength is up to 30 or 40, you shouldn't have too much trouble. Otherwise, just attack, and don't forget the HP --> MP swapping trick!
**************
What does Dexterity DO, anyway?
At 40, you get double evade. At 128, running away will always work. And at 200, you'll never need to cast Haste again, because you'll get it permanently.
**************
I've looked all over in that tower. No Wizard, no boss fight, and no Akara.
You'll need to hit that switch I told you about.
**************
I can't defeat the corpse! (this also applies to the Giant Spider)
Buy the Iron Armor.
**************
Doom reduces you to 1 HP! Was this intentional?
I'm guessing it was. If you can confirm or deny this, please email me.
**************
I've been looking all over, and I can't find the cave with the Faith Armor.
It's on the map in this guide, but you won't be able to find it if you don't have the Faith Sword.

I thought RPGs were supposed to have HAPPY endings!

11. CALCULATION DETAILS
--------------
Here is where I explain how damage is calculated in the code of Dying Eyes. I will explain (1) how much damage an enemy takes when you hit it, and (2) how much damage you take when one hits you.
...eventually. The Calculation Details section is coming soon, don't worry!

12. CHALLENGES (for Advanced Players)
--------------
Here are a few challenges for those who think they've gotten all they can out of Dying Eyes.
1. Speed Challenge
How fast can you complete the entire game of Dying Eyes? The speed record is currently open.
2. Inn Challenge
Can you finish the entire game WITHOUT ever resting at an inn or buying an item? It's possible!
3. Low-level Endgame
What is the lowest level you can finish the game at? The current record belongs to aladdinslamp, for finishing at level 18.
4. 0 HP!
Can you complete the entire game with 0 HP? According to Charles Wetzel, who sent in this challenge idea:
"I seriously completed the entire game during a single long bus ride with 0 HP. It's possible -- just make sure you kill all the enemies before they get a hit. For enemies with high HP, you'll need haste (two attacks per turn) and ReLife. This allows you to cast ReLife on yourself and strike once. You get struck, die, and are instantly resurrected, and can do it all over again. There were some other things to this, too. I don't quite remember all of them, but it is possible."
If you have video of a new record for challenges 1 or 3, email it to me and I'll put YOU in this guide!
