Readme for TrueGray Viewer

v1.0.0 May, 2005

Thank you for trying TrueGray Viewer, the best way to view grayscale images on the TI-83 Plus graphing calculator.

Introduction

TrueGray is a flicker-free, 7-layer grayscale algorithm for the TI-83 Plus. This readme explains how to use the TrueGray Viewer to view TrueGray images on your calculator. The viewer has a menu interface along with options to view and cycle through images, adjust contrast, and view negatives. TrueGray is incompatible with previous grayscale technologies. To view incompatible images, you will need to assemble TrueGray images from the original bitmaps using the TrueGray Console Application.

TrueGray is the culmination of several months work over the past few years. Rapid, complex bit masking allows the TrueGray algorithm to achieve an exact timing necessary to display the best possible grayscale images. Although 3 bits can encode eight layers, the TrueGray algorithm displays only seven layers so that it can utilize the best masks while maintaining a uniform distribution of gray intensities.

Installation

  1. Send truegray.8xp to your calculator using TI Connect or TI-GRAPH LINK.
  2. Using the same connectivity software, send one or more TrueGray images to your calculator. These may be samples included with the TrueGray download or your own images assembled by the TrueGray Console Application.
  3. Use Ion or MirageOS to execute TrueGray Viewer (note that the program will not execute if it detects no TrueGray images on your calculator).
  4. View your TrueGray images (refer to the section entitled Controls).
