You have to be caught once in a while, unless your teacher is a blind idiot. Your sitting at your desk, staring at your calculator as you play mario or tetris, certainly not paying attention to the teacher. The teacher's going to catch on sooner or later. I've been caught several times since I got my 86 last Christmas. I've been caught in English, Business, History, Algebra, hmm, what other subjects do I have? Most teachers shrug it off, no big deal, but one REALLY mean teacher was telling our class that she knows how to clear a calculator's memory and if she catches anyone playing a game in her class, she will clear the memory. Thank GOD she's the exception!

I've been caught in Calculus. He took it away for about half of the the class. He gave it back to me when he assigned claswork, but told me never to play in class again.
I still do.
I believe he had no justification for this. No where in my Code of Conduct or School rules said anything about no playing games. Also he didn't even give out a list of class rules. I hate this.
But I can't approach him with this since it is an AP class, and he's coach of the Math Team.
What a dilemma.

My Calculus teacher is the only one who cared... he took my 83 and pulled the batteries out of it in front of the whole class. He asked me what I was doing, and since he obviously knew (he saw the tetris title screen), I told him and you should have seen his face... he wasn't expecting me to tell the truth... hahaha.

Thank God I've never had a teacher that has cleared my memory. Usually I play the games not during a lecture because I've had teachers that have keen eyes. Also try not to play them in English class or other non-math related course. I know it is tempting but pulling out a TI-83 during the middle of a grammar lesson is gonna raise some suspicion.

My memory is usually cleared about two or three times a week.(all on the same day and in the same class) When my teacher clears my memory in about 10 min. i got all the programs from my friends and i start playing agin. (my teacher hates me for this.)

I got caught playing Pheonix.. after my teacher saw me continuously tapping on the 2nd key on my TI-89. So, I quit the program with my lightning speed fingers, goto DoorOS and shut it off with password on. I'm so glad that most teachers are TI-89 blind, that's because they only know how to use the TI-83. Sucks for them ^_^

There is a program called Clearit that can be very usfull in this situation. After running the program on your calc, which installs it, when you go to MEM - RESET - ALL and hit YES, the calc appears to be reset. It give the

Mem Cleared
Defaults Set

screen and even resets the contrast, but everything in the memory stays there. Very creative.

*Doesn't help much if the batteries are pulled!

I think that the Clearit program is very useful. One time i made an encrypted chat program and my girlfriend and i were sending dirty messages over the link. My teacher walked by and, him not seeing the cord, caught it with his leg and looked at my calc. By the time I had the memory "cleared" he sent me and my girl to the office. She got it worse because i forgot to send it to her. She dumped me and I continued the 6th grade not going out with the hottest girl in school.

My teachers say they will clear the memory but when they do, they give it back to me and since I have all my games in groups, I ungroup them and pick up where I left off. None of my teachers know how to do any more than a RAM clear. I archive all the things I can. Boy, teachers are dumb. Also, I can sit in class in front of my spanish teacher and she dosn't seem to notice the calculator between me and the work I'm supposed to be doing. I think she's blind... :D

I may be wrong, but I think I was told once that clearing a memory without the owner's consent is deliberate destruction of property. After all, Is there a big difference between some dumbass hacker saying format c: and some teacher pressing 2nd mem reset? Both deal with destruction of (on more advanced calculators, such as the 89 or 92, which you can take class notes on) perhaps valuable data, but nothing would happen to the teacher even if he intentionally erased a semesters worth of History that god knows you need for the final (yes that happened to me, and it really sucked, especially since we have to turn the notes in at the end of the end of the semester) This is unfair, but happily enough, someone invented 'au' for the 89, so i just keep important stuff archived in case of a crash.

Someone please let me know where i can find out about that destruction of property bit, as I would like to show my teachers something that says yay or nay. I'd appreciate it.

I have *always* thought of resetting a calculator's memory without the owner's consent to be along the same lines as reformatting a computer’s hard drive without the owner’s consent. A computer would loose much more data, and there is a good chance that the only loss on the calc would be a few games that you could just get back again, HOWEVER, they don’t know that when they are resetting it! Luckily for me, teachers at my school just don’t seem to care enough to reset it. However, I don’t think that it is ever right to. For example, I had a math test today. Now, if someone reset my calc before the test, I would loose all of my math programs and score worse on the test. Now, I made those programs, and nobody else should be able to destroy them except me. If I suddenly decide to run one of them during my history class and the teacher doesn’t like it, there are other ways to handle it that don’t involve resetting it.

Hmmm.... You guys should shove the calcs in your pockets when the teacher says to give it to him. Then he/she could do absolutely nothing. Without illegal search and seizure. You could also put it in your back pack. Just a thought.

Actually, the schools principals legally can search your bags and posessions at any given time w/ out a search warrant... it's some new law where if they have suspisions it's legal, and while we're on the subject, if TIcalc.org is becoming as large as they say they are, the newspapers, etc., then they are slowly gaining more and more responsibility and liability. Now if they put all of these "funny" articles on here and it offends someone they could get a defamation suit on their (excuse the language) @ss, not that anyone would do that LOL but i am just making sure that they remember that.

YES my physics teacher is probably the most knowledgable person I know... its hard to understand what he is talking about because no one in the class can comprehend the words he uses. It is sorta cool though because If you ask him a in depth question he will take the entire class period explaining it to the class and its an easy way to get out of doing anything. I play games occasionally in that class but only when its at the end of the period and we have nothing to do.

My physics teacher isn't stupid, she's just a ditz. She always talks about getting locked up in "the pokey" (jail) for doing this and getting locked up for going to a bar and playing darts with a biker. You can't read her writing and she's only about 40 years old. She does, however, know her physics and makes everyone erase their memories on their calc. I just us FMC and get by just fine.

That is something to LOL about, how stupid can people get. I have never been caught, but teachers give you the look ('_')sometimes and you just close it down. I made a little program that when you add a snippet of code in the beginning of a program locks it, so even if it is confscaited, all "protected" programs look like they are blank, it clears the screen and displays DONE. It does not do any thing about turning the calc on or reseting it, but I might add that into a future version. That is when I learn Assembely.

Are you kidding?!? Not to brag, but I have developed the act of playing in class into a refined art...Like all rewarding things in life, it requires patience. Obviously, you never pound or tap the keys; but then you must be subtle, and pause your game to watch the instructor and scribble a few notes. This, along with avoiding staring bug-eyed at the calc for hours, will ensure you are never caught...

I also have found this to be a VERY VERY VERY good way of doing things. After being caught a few time, having my @sshole Algebra 2 teacher clear the mem a few times, and getting a couple of detentions, I started to do this. It really does work. It's been 2 years since I was last caught. Oh, and for those killer Tetris games that have excellent potential, just save them with the del key in a crisis situation.
