This survey is an exact duplicate of the one in the Webpage link for this post.

The purpose is to see if the demographics of the ticalc.org community have changed over the past 7 years (People seem to think that it has shifted towards more younger kids).

Unless Ranman (35) or Zeljko Juric (late 30's if I remember correctly) speak up, I might win it... 30.5 here.

That would be cool. I would love to teach math or computer programming.

But... In reality... I am an Embedded Software Engineer for Lockheed Martin Aeronautics.

Of course as time goes on, younger kids will be more prevalent here. Ages 14-15 are usually in 8th grade Algebra, my first class to require a graphing calculator. There shouldn't be many under that age unless they are younger brothers/sisters.

The number of people should progressively get smaller in the 16, 17-18, and 19-22 ranges because most people either lose interest or become too busy to come here anymore. The ones we see over 23 are most likely some of the people that were here when ticalc.org was "founded."

I, myself, am 16 and have been coming since I was 14. I don't come as much as I used to, but I have an RSS feed of the news items, so every time one is posted [waaaaaaay less often that in previous years] I'll come visit. Sometimes I'll come just to check out what programs have been uploaded.

I used to program alot, and I even released a few programs onto here. Sadly, they are all in BASIC because I never took the time to learn ASM. I still say I'm going to try someday, but that's probably wishful thinking. I don't really program that much anymore unless I'm stranded on a desert isle with only my calculator, but I've been working on a game for the past year or so on and off.

Interest just kind of fades as one gets older.

You are right. In high school, I was obsessed with my calc in every aspects, but when I went to the university, I somehow lost interest, even though I went to an engineering school.

Also note that after the release of 84+ and 89 titanium, the memory usages of the apps and programs suddenly increased and I was able to store only a few of those apps at a time in my standard 83 Plus and I did not want to spend too much time for my calc.

Another interesting thing about my dminishing interest in the calculator is the non availability of a serial port on my notebook. My Black GraphLink beacme obsolete and I just didn't want to buy the usb graphlink. Thats's why I bothered less to install new porgrams and apps onto my calculator.

That's interesting because I only needed to get a graphics calculator for year ten (And even that was for year eleven maths). I suppose it must be different in the US (I am Australian); I only needed a scientific calculator for earlier maths.

I personally think a graphing calculator is only necessary in a statistics class where the functions and programming capability make everything easier and less time-consuming. I don't think other high school classes should require these calculators since students will learn how to use their calculator to solve math problems instead of using their pencils and paper, if you even need that much.

I've just turned 19 and am currently doing Computer Science at RMIT.

I started using an 83+ in Year 9, then a 92ii in Year 11 and finally a 92+ in Year 12.

Calculators weren't essential for high school mathematics but they did increase my interest in programming.

After becoming dependent on calculators it was a bit of a shock to learn that I wasn't allowed to use them for university mathematical tests! This was okay though as I really didn't want to spend $300 on a TI 89ti.

However, for the exam we were permitted to use one. :-)
This was simply because some of the questions required us to use algorithms where the number of iterations isn't feasible to do by hand in the given amount of time.

I found a TI 89 Titanium for AUD$199 NEW btw :-D w00t

Oh, and Functions on the calculator are pretty nifty! Try doing the euclidean algorithm by hand, and then try making a program to display every iteration of the algorithm. Is it faster to copy down the answer that includes full working from the calculator or is it faster to do it by hand? :-P

I found that my calculator started getting less interesting only once I installed linux and started experimenting with it. I found that, yes, my computer really IS more powerful and easier to program with than my calculator.
