You know, that was really poor sarcasm. If you are going to copy people, you might as well do it right. In html, a tag is defined as having these around it <tag> and to finish the tag, you have this </tag>. So, in html, to center things, you would go <center>THINGS TO BE CENTERED</center>. That is why people go <sarcasm></sarcasm>. Like I said, if your going to do it, do it right. You don't see people quoting other people by saying something that is about the same. "To be, or not to be, that is the question." is not quoted by saying "The question is to be, or not to be.". Get it right!!! (Sorry, hope you don't take offense to this)

Well, I didn't celebrate the new millenium because it's not the new millenium. 2001 is the new millenium. I'm tired of hearing about "the new millenium" because the fact is it's not! Anyway, I'm tired and I just wanted to vent. Oh yeah, first post!! :)

The funny thing is, it actually is the new millenium. Note that there is only one 'n,' not two as in millennium. It is *not* the new millennium, but Microsft (I think) invented the word millenium to mean 2000. It's explained on the TI Millenium Nominations page.
So Happy Millenium, everybody!

okay shut up about this "millinium" and "millinnium" crap. It is the year 2000 and if that isnt big enough to celebrate then your living in a shell and/or a loser. Get up from the calculator and have some real fun for once. Come on it will be good for you to see some nonartifial light.

Actually I was programming my 86, had intended to go out of my room and watch *something* happen (in central time zone, we don't have big dropping balls), but I forgot, looked up and saw it was 12:04, said oh, well, noticed the lights were still on and went to bed.

1. Actually, most Christians think Jesus was born in 4 B.C., meaning it would be 2004 right now; 1996 would have been the new millennium.

2. We don't even know _that_ for sure. Actually, we could be anywhere between 43 years ahead to 32 years behind. We have no clue when the mil. really changes. =)

These, people are right, the next Meliniumdoesn't start till jan 1, 2001. And i can proove it(i'm NOT trying to be mean, just let people know the truth, because many have been brain washedabout the year it starts.) any way, a melleinium is 1000 FULL years. OKAY. The first year of A.D. was the year 1. so 1 is the 1st year of the first melinium. 2 is the 2nd ... and 1000 ad is the 1000th year. so year one of the 2nd Melinium doesen't start till 1001. add 1000 years and the third M doesn't start till 2001. Hope this helped. if not , too bad.

If you want to be technical, no one actually knows when the year 1 A.D. was, so it doesn't really matter

EMan2k1 Account Info

I have to agree here. The year 1 A.D. was not really Christ's birth year (since it was figured incorrectly), so I don't really think anyone knows what the first year was. Also, our decades and centuries begin at the zero (1970, 1990, 3000, etc.), so doesn't it make sense to ring in the new millennium with the new century and decade? Since it's now the 21st century, I say it's also now the 2nd millennium. Even if you say decades and centuries are wrong, who's to say the first century wasn't just 99 years and the first millennium 999? Works for me.

At times in history we've had to adjust the years to correct the calendar with the earth. Maybe it's time to correct the millennium to 1000, 2000; not 1001, 2001. By the way, how much fun did any of you purists have ignoring the change of the millennium while we were all partying on New Year's?

I REALLY hate doing this...it's against my principles to get into this argument...so I won't really get into the main point.

But...

As long as you say the new millennium begins next year--the new century and decade is next year, too. If it is not yet the _3rd_ Millennium, it's not the 21st century yet either. They go together, no matter when you think the new millennium starts.

If you think it's the 21st Century then it's the 3rd Millennium, because the first millenium was 1-1000, the second was 1001-2000, the third should be 2001-3000.

Also tecnically the new millenium doesn't start till 2001, this makes more sense because the year 2000 is still in the second millenium (ie the 2) and is in the 20th century (ie the 20).

New decades and centuries also start at ***1.

2001 will begin the 201st decade, the 21st century, and the 3rd millennium--simultaneously (acc. to our calendars). There's no uproar about the century because the mil. overshadows it and no uproar over decades because who cares about them? We've had about 200 since Christ was born!

The Gregorian calendar, the ONLY calendar relevant to the western Christian world, started at year 1, yes it's true. Since the millennium, century, and decade OBVIOUSLY <ahem> ended in 1999, then we are now just under 99 years from the next exciting rollover. See you in 2098!

Decades have to do with the same # in the 3rd digit. Centuries and milleniums both start from 1.

But we don't designate the decade by its number; we never say "this is the 200th decade," like we do for centuries and millennia. If that was the case, you'd be right: decades wouldn't start until xxx1. But since we say the "90s" or the "70s," it's correct to say that a decade runs from xxx0 to xxx9.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: What did you do for the new year?

This argument makes sense.

Technically, I suppose you could call 1000-1999 a "millennium", although it's simply not valid to call it "the second millennium" simply because there was not a full millennium before it (only 99.9% of one). In the same way, there were not two full millenniums before Jan. 1, 2000 (only 1 and 99.9% of a second). But the time period from 1000-1999 is still a millennium (as the definition of a millennium is "a thousand years"). In the same way, 1900-2000 is technically a century, but it's not the "20th century" (there were only 18 centuries and 99% of the 19th before it).

Since we do not refer to the decades using ordinal numbers, they can technically start anywhere we want them to. For example, from March 6, 1984 to March 5, 1994 is a decade. However, you could not prefix this decade with an ordinal number (or at least not an ordinal integer) because there was not an integer number of decades between it and January 1, 0001.

Who really knows when the millennium is?
For most of the world, it is the year: 2000 (we just passed OUR millennium)
For some religious people who hate science: 1403
For even more STUPID people: 24
There are even more...
REALLY!
So NOONE knows when the millennium starts! IT IS NOT IN 2000 OR 2001! It dates back to the orignal calendar based a looooonnnnngggg time ago. And we have lost contact with that type of calendar/date system in the 1800's when science prevailed.
