This survey was contributed by Brian Kim.

I think we could hear some interesting stories out of this one!

Is there any way that, instead of having to announce who submitted the survey, it just shows up in the box above your post along with the "posted at XX:XX:XX on XX/XX/XX by Morgan"

I trashed my 85 so I could convince my parents to get an 86... they couldn't tell the difference between a sledgehammer and dropping it out a window by "accident."

Yes, I have had to use mine when my TI-89's link port became malfunctional. In my opinion, the link ports on all the calcs seem very fragile, anyone else notice this as well?

You could always e-mail it to them, or get a Geocities web site and put it on there, or... dozens of other things.

That's exactly what happened to my 83+SE (Before I got my 86 and 89). Sent it in, got a refurbished one, with a serial number that doesn't work an TI's registering.

Well, you need to complain to TI about that one (and insist until they fix your problem). After all, _they_ sent you the refurbished calculator with the already used serial number.

My calculators have never gotten to the point where I have to send it to TI for it to be fixed. In fact, nothing bad happens to them at all. I don't understand how other people's just break and stuff...

Eeek, that sucks. I agree, TI link ports seem kind of fragile, mine only works if I turn the cable a certain direction and apply pressure upwards.

Mine to, I have to hold it in the whole time (it's way beyont the warente), one (maybe the only) reason why the ubs port on 84+/se and 89ti is good.

Yeah, the USB port will help out, and standard USB transfer runs at ~10Mb/s (or is it 100?), so transfers with the tiny files we deal with will be almost instantaneous.

true, but the the titanium may have refurbished link technology to accomodate USB speed. I have a question about it though, do you think the USB will provide power like standard USB? If so, then it will be easy to attach USB peripherals made for laptops such as fans, lights, mug warmers, etc to the calculator, which would be awesome.

This would probably overload the TI's circuitry. Don't expect much power out of this, especially not enough to power a fan. A small led light might be possible, but keep in mind you might fry the calculator's circuits because it wasn't meant for such large currents.

USB 2.0 is 12Mbps max.

USB 1.1 (I don't know but that's all I got in my laptop here.

USB 2.0 is 480Mbps, and USB 1.1 is 12Mbps. I am 100% sure of this. IEEE 1394 (FireWire) is 400Mbps in Windows and Macs have 400Mbps and 800Mbps FireWire.

Either way, it is surely much faster than the common baud rate of 9600bps for a serial link cable.

I don't think the addapters are really 2.5mm, maybe 2.6mm because I've tried several 2.5mm plugs in my 83+ and they just don't fit.
Link Ports and maybe screens, appear to be the only things that go wrong.

They dont really care if you have your warranty. They replaced my broken calc even though it was almost 2 years past warranty.

true, true.

They replaced my inoperable HW1 TI-89 with a new HW2 even though the warranty was way past expired. They're really nice about that stuff. They shipped mine fast enough so that I'd have it in time for an exam, too.

wow, fast post.

I chose "No" because my 89 wasn't covered by warranty when I replaced it, so I couldn't have really said that I used an expired warranty.

My 2001-vintage HW2 TI-89 just bit the dust due to the batteries exploding inside of the back of it (I kid you not- the Duracells just popped open and fizzed when I was checking series convergence!)

The brownish, fizzy gunk had to have leaked into the calc and ruined the memory becuase I have terrible errors frequently and for no reason at all.

So, I had to buy a new V200 to replace it- exams are next week. I surely don't want to be without a fully functional calculator for those. I did get a good deal on one- how does $175.00 sound?

I have seen the end of link cables get stuck in the link ports. The only solution was to pop the back of teh calculator open or else only use the link cable that had the missing part. Luckily it wasn't my calculator...

yes, I did notice this. and the contact broke of the port itself, so I had to cannibalize another calc for it's link port.

Re: Re: Have you had to use the warranty on your calculator?

That exact same thing happened to me. All TI asked me was when I bought the calculator - it was several years ago and the warranty was no longer valid - but they still honored the warranty! They simply sent me a new 89 after I sent mine to them. It is like new with an "R" stamped/engraved on the back of it. I'm guessing that stands for either refurbished or remanufactered.

So, in response, yeah - the I/O ports do seem quite fragile - the reported problem with my calc was "damaged I/O port", but I only used the port in a normal fashion (i.e. I never yanked the cable out, etc). It is also quite evident (from my experience) that TI doesn't really care how about whether or not your warranty has expired... that's good. :)
