You can easily find that with Google so I don't have to duplicate already existing information here.

NFS - Network file system - it is accually a file system close to that of NTFS - Microsoft got the idea for NTFS from this file system. It allows for easy mounting of drives and other such Unix based operations due to the fact that the flie system was made for UNIX. It does have Windows support.

SMB - Ever heard of Samba - thought not. This is the protocol used by Windows systems when you share a drive or printer. You already know what it is - just not that it had a name.

RSYNC - A UNIX protocol - it saves file permissions and can update whole directory trees. If you are a Gentoo Linux user this is your best friend.

SSH - Secure Shell - another Unix protocol. This guy is very powerful. Through this protocol you can log into a remote machine and use it as if you where there. However, it is only command prompt and text based. As a Linux user it does everything I need short of playing games remotely. It allows the sending and recieving of files similar to that of FTP. This prototol is even able to de port forwarding - AKA - you accesses one computer and then talk to another one through the computer you just logged onto. This can be used to send one protocol through port 22 to another computer. Plus - as its name implies - it is very secure because everything is encripted. It can even act similar to a VPN (Virtual Private Network).

I am at a loss - SMB or RSYNC?
RSYNC because it needs someone to vote for it.

Did that clear everything up?

Whoops! huge typo - I so meant to say SSH instead of SMB in "I am at a loss - SMB or RSYNC?" - Ya - that totally was wrong. I would feel a lot better if SMB didn't exist!

Forgot to say - the reason you don't know about them is bacause only Unix users (that includes Mac OS X but to a smaller degree) use it or call it by its name (in the case of SMB). I had no idea of there existence before using Linux. That by no means says that if I were still a Windows user I wouldn't use them. They are all great protocals (except SMB - hehe - I am a little prejudice againt Microsoft).

Hey! Back off! RSYNC needs to live forever!

HTTP is a horrible protocol for file transfer. The only good thing is that every website has it. For small sets of files it is fine and dandy, but for huge directory trees and such it just doesn't begin to do the job (ex - let HTTP take the place of a CVS - that would be interesting).

RSYNC has saved my life over and over again - only because I am a Gentoo user.

Slightly off subject - Gentoo is the best OS out there!

I sux0r too much to use gentoo, or even redhat for much, oh yeah, is it remotley possible to update glibc? not gonna bother with nearly manual install of gentoo. Of course, we need nsync and other such bands, to make us believe any other pop bands are good. LONG LIVE PHISH AND THE REMAINING DEAD!!!!

*sigh* windows. x86 466 mhz *another sigh* celeron, 192 megs ram, 20 gigs FAT32, 20 gigs ext3 (10 gig win, 30 gig ext3 amd fat), blah blah blah. Dual boot redhat and windows, kernel problems, gonna try compiling with SMP, Gentoo does sound really great I gotta say though, sort of a build source and make pakadge list from them / apt type? I should try it some time when I am less new.

Hmmm. With redhat - you con try getting the source (I have never done so - it should be fairly easy to obtain but installation is a different story). I would try the RedHat network or RPMs.

FTP is AWESOME!!!
HTTP is just too slow for me, i cbf looking through all the articles and so forth. So FTP is just quicker, although it takes a couple of hours to download the entire archive each month :P *DOWNLOADS+FTP=HIGH BANDWIDTH USAGE!"

Yes, but HTTP is more easy to use and you can download faster, I mean that on FTP servers they often limit bandwidth ;)

I guess in FTP it is possible to swarm download, like with p2p apps, as resume is possible. If you want a good client for windows, download smartftp. Not open source, but free for non commercial use and pretty good, although there is a rarely occuring nag screen. FTP is nice for large files if they are not downloaded in browser (mozilla has a nice manager, but I use IE for speed, and I am not bothering with download accelerator spyware) but http is good for small. Of course, FTP is not too secure, as we have seen. My favorite protocol, winmx.

Yeah, I was just about to ask that. I've only ever downloaded from HTTP before (though websites have named ftp download links that I've clicked on).

I'm a bit lazy to look them up on google right now because I have a crapload of homework. Maybe somebody else will start talking about them.

Oh, by the way... nice British spelling of "Favourite" :)

Why do we spell words like that differently, anyway? It's the same language...

Because they're two different places that are physically separated. Over time, dialects will form within the same language and things can end up different, especially when there is not much communication going on between the areas.

Of course, communication isn't a problem now, but I'm sure it was less common a century ago.

You know what I'd like to see? I'd like to see a german couple, english couple, and french couple traped on an Island. Then 200 years later, see how the language had evolved to encorperate all the languages.

But... English is the most commonly known language (probably)... most people who speak another language also know English as a secondary language. Broken English is universal. Everybody can speak it! :)

English -- I am talking England english -- really pisses me off. I listen to the BBC world service every night before I go to bed, and the speach is so horrible. The quality of speakers that they let do the reporting is horrible. While their short commings are too numberous to count, the one thing that annoys me to no end is the fact that no one on that radio broadcast can pronounce their "er"'s at the end of words correctly. They always say "a". So words become "fartha" instead of "farther". However when a word has an "a", they say "er" like "australia" turns into "australier". It is just downright horrible.

personally, I am sick of hearing people mee- tiik- uoe- lousleee pronouncing words, I would rather hear an 'er' changed to 'a', rather than said constantly as RE, not RI or RA or something slightly less jarring on the nervous system. Then again, maybe just my being Canadian does it...

English is made up from many ancient and modern languages. Therefore there will be different rules of pronunciation for different words.

Yep welcome to dialect.
You want to know the true example of bad pronunciation - router (as in a computer 'router') or re-route being pronounced as a router (a wood working tool). The latter, pronounced r-out, is to remove something permantantly. The former, pronounced root, is to redirect something.

Or people (in general) saying pronOunciation.

Anyway no one in England says father - we just call him the 'Old git'.
